Term Two, Week Seven

St Joseph's Primary School • June 10, 2020

Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

It was wonderful to see families and friends back on school grounds this week. In further good news, we look forward to welcoming the wider St Joseph’s community to our cross country event which will be held next Wednesday 17th June from 10:30am - 12:30pm for students from Pre-Primary - Year 6.

Year 5/6 Camp
The Year 5/6 camp has been booked at Lake Argyle for Wednesday 12th August - Friday 14th August. Please refer to the note sent home earlier this week. More information will be provided prior to the end of the term.

Parent/Teacher/Child Conferences
On Tuesday 28th July and Wednesday 29th July, opportunities will be provided for parents, carers and students to meet with teachers to discuss Semester 1 reports. Social and academic goals for the remainder of the year will be set at these meetings and any questions arising from reports can be raised. A sign-in sheet will be sent home with students next week. Please fill this in and return it to the school. If there is a clash with the time you have requested, your child’s teacher will contact you to arrange an alternative.

Student Leaders
Despite the disruptions we have encountered to the 2020 school year, our student leaders met on Monday to share their achievements as well as their goals for the remainder of the term. It was pleasing to hear the students talk about:
  • Helping Ms Deb with the breakfast program.
  • Assisting younger students at recess and lunch.
  • Assisting with special events such as our recent Crazy Hair Day and upcoming Cross Country run.
  • Organising additional fundraising events.
  • Speaking on Waringarri Radio.
  • Delivering important messages to other classes.
  • Reaching out to those in need within our community.
  • We look forward to continuing to benefit from the good work of our student leaders over the coming weeks.

Reconciliation
We wish Monika Garrity and Shakira Ward all the best as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St Vincent Pallotti Church on Thursday 25th June at 5:00pm.

Book Fair
Ms Eileen is currently setting up our Book Fair in the library. Students, families and friends will be able to purchase items each day after school next week from 2:00pm - 2:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sick Children
A reminder that if your child is sick, please keep them at home and notify the office about the reason they are not at school. Thank you in anticipation of your support and understanding.

Reflection from Holy Trinity Sunday
God wants us to love our neighbour with authentic love. That demands that we allow the Risen Christ to make his home within our hearts. If our behaviour is to mirror the life of the Trinity, then the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit, should govern our every word and action.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Justice of the Peace

Need a JP?

Sr Julianne Murphy is a Justice of the Peace (JP), so if you need a signature witnessed, contact her on 0428 121 351

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

RE News

Current restrictions around gatherings have eased and we are delighted to be able to attend Mass again.  Hand sanitisers are used and the Church seating has altered to comply with social distancing. We would love to see you there.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is re-scheduled for Thursday, 25th June for Shakira Ward and Monika Garrity. I ask that you all keep them in our prayers. First Eucharist will occur early in Term 3, so stay tuned for a new date.

Our NAIDOC celebrations are able go ahead as well. Our opening ceremony will be Monday, 29th June, shortly after 8:00am. Our School NAIDOC closing Liturgy will be on Friday, 3rd of July, at 1:00pm. I encourage parents and grandparents to attend and join in the celebrations.

The classes have also had Sister Julianne visit them this week and talk about the Holy Trinity – The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

Specialist Classes
Art
During art this term students have engaged in a range of activities that examine, experiment with and involve the elements of colour, space and proportion, and line and movement. They have created artwork with drawn backgrounds and finger-painted details to the foreground; cubism rainbow drawings with oil pastels; nature insects (using collected sticks, bark, grass and leaves to create insects); Macca the Alpaca-inspired drawings and other experimentations using different-sized objects to make their artwork eye-catching.
Students also painted fingerprint animals and plants. They enjoyed examining their own fingerprints and comparing them to those of their peers. They’ve had fun making a mess, improvising and stepping out of their comfort zones and I am amazed at their enthusiasm and engagement thus far.

Library
In library classes students have read a range of fun and interesting fiction books, including this week’s ever-enjoyable If You Give A Moose A Muffin by Laura Numeroff. They have completed complementary reading, writing and craft activities based around the book of the week. This week students made a moose headband using a tracing of their hands and arms for the antlers. We have discussed how to remove, replace, use, store, borrow and return books to the library and it’s been pleasing to notice an improvement in library etiquette with every visit.
Students spend time adjusting the books after we finish our lesson to ensure that the library is kept in great order for the whole school to enjoy.

Digital Technology
In Digital Technology students have investigated coding. Using chalk and A3 paper they have created basic treasure maps and tracks for both the Sphero robot and Bee-bots to follow.
Students are focusing on shared learning by working in pairs and small groups to complete a track and assisting each other to input data correctly. I commend the peer assistance given during lessons. It is great to see students helping those who are struggling.
Students have loved using the Sphero robots to create sophisticated and exciting coding that has included noise, speed, lights and rotations. In the lower years, students use the drawing tool to create their tracks and have practiced writing the alphabet and their spelling words for Sphero to follow. The older students are beginning to draw mazes and test their ability to measure out each Sphero movement using the drawing application and using coding tiles to create interesting routes.
It has been wonderful to see students from Kindy through to Year 4/5 engaging with the different technologies that we have to offer. I look forward to continuing a productive, fun and engaging term.
