Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

It has been wonderful to see a large number of families attend our Book Fair this week. Thank you to Ms Eileen Watkins who is selling the books in the library from 2:00-2:30 pm each day. The Book Fair will be in operation until Friday 26th June or until stocks have been sold. Don’t miss out!

Photos
Our school photos are back on! The date for our photos is Friday 28th August. More information will be available soon.

Delightful Deeds
It has been pleasing to see a number of students reach out to others and doing their best to brighten someone else’s day. Well done to:
  • Lacey, Bethany and Ruby who gave up some recess and lunch time to make a get-well card for Sr Tina
  • The Year 4/5 class who wrote cards to the residents at Juniper Aged Care Facility
  • Mrs Christopher’s Gifted and Talented class who made bubble wands with the 3-D printer that can be used by other students at recess and lunch breaks.

Parent or Carer/Teacher/Child Conferences
A note has been sent home with further details about these conferences on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th July. Please return your form to school as soon as possible so teachers can accommodate your preferred meeting time. If there is a clash of times, teachers will make contact so that alternate arrangements can be made. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss children’s progress from Semester 1 and establish academic and social goals over the remainder of the year.

Farewell
With sadness we will be farewelling Melina Johnson and her family at the end of this term. Melina is relocating to Wyndham and has accepted an Aboriginal Teacher Assistant position at St Joseph’s Wyndham. An advertisement to find a replacement for Melina has been placed on the CEWA website Careers page as well as on our Facebook page. We thank Melina, Chance, Sierra, Ezmayah and Quintarnah for the valuable contribution they have made to our school and we wish them all the best for the future.

NAIDOC Week - ‘Always was, Always will be.’
The Aboriginal Teacher Assistants have been busy preparing activities for NAIDOC Week, which will be held at our school from Monday 29th June - Friday 3rd July. Children are invited to come to school in causal clothes on Friday 3rd July, wearing the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander flags (red, black, yellow, blue, white and green). Families and friends are welcome to join us for the opening ceremony at 8:00am on Monday 29th June and our closing liturgy at 1:10pm on Friday 3rd July. Both events will be held on the lawn at the front of the school.

Sacrament of Reconciliation
We wish Monika Garrity and Shakira Ward well as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation next Thursday at St Vincent Pallotti Church.

Congratulations
Well done to Jonas Pufke who recently won the Bushcamp Surplus Store Colouring Competition. For his wonderful efforts, Jonas is now the proud owner of a brand new swag.

Docker’s Shield
Good luck to students In Years 4, 5 & 6 who will be representing our school at the Docker’s Shield Football Carnival at the Town Oval from 9:00am - 12:00pm next Thursday 25th June.

Reminders

Don't miss out!

Our Bus is Full!

We prefer card

In these COVID tiimes we prefer payment by card so that we don't have to handle cash. There are EFTPOS machines in the office and Canteen. We accept most cards, including the Indue Card.

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

Year 4/5 News

It’s certainly been a different term in Year 4/5. In Reading, students have had some special help with their comprehension strategies from the superheroes of the ‘Comprehension Universe’. ‘Super Summariser’ assists with their summarising strategy; ‘Captain Clarifier’ with understanding different words and sentences that they aren’t aware of; ‘I-Wonder-Woman’ with creating questions around the text; and ‘Mr Predictor’ with making predictions about what might happen next in the text. We encourage all students to arrive at school on time as this will further assist them in their reading.

Our caring nature has been on full display this term. Students have been busy writing cards to the residents of Juniper Aged Care Facility to let them know we are thinking of them in these trying times. I know how much this kind gesture was appreciated. Bethany Breet, Lacey Polzin and Ruby Darby have taken it upon themselves to create a poster signed by all students to send to Sister Tina as she recovers from surgery.

Year 2
Once Upon a Time the magnificent Year 2 class undertook some Project-Based Learning as part of their Narrative Writing Unit.
Project-Based Learning is a teaching method in which students actively engage in real-world and personally meaningful projects. The class project theme is “Once Upon a Time Land” and we have worked extremely hard to make our writing exciting by exploring different characters and settings. The children have looked at ‘Fairytale’ and ‘Avengers’ maps and brainstormed ideas to create their own land. We then become architects and researched building ideas on Pinterest and Google. Once the map, ‘the small world tray’, was finished we created our settings out of box construction materials. We have many settings, including Candy Land, Chocolate Cake World, Ironman Mansion, Radiator Springs, Spiderman City, Minecraft Tree House, a Rocket and Fairy Land.
Visualising is a technique we have focussed on this term to make our stories come to life. We have completed various activities to develop this skill such as 5 senses writing, D.A.D (description, action and dialogue) writing from hilarious picture prompts and even using the new 360 Virtual Reality Goggles. One lucky person was selected to wear the goggles and explained what they were seeing while the rest of the class drew it. There were some fantastic sketches thanks to the new technology!
