Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

It was pleasing to see so many families and friends attend our Cross Country event last Wednesday. Thank you to Mr Zahra for his wonderful organisation and well done to the students and staff for making this a successful day. It was pleasing to see plenty of 'God Moments' where the spirit of Jesus was reflected in a number of ways. This was most evident in the way students supported and encouraged each other to be the best they could. It was also terrific to see students being humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Congratulations to Ord Faction, the overall winners on the day.

Reports
Reports will be sent home with students next Wednesday. As a result of the interruptions we encountered at the end of Term 1 and beginning of Term 2, the layout of these reports will look slightly different. I commend the teachers on providing detailed accounts regarding the learning journey of each student during the first semester.

NAIDOC Week
Thank you to our ATAs who have organised a variety of activities as we celebrate NAIDOC Week from Monday 29th June - Friday 3rd July. Families and friends are welcome to join us for our opening ceremony on Monday at 8:00am as well as our closing liturgy next Friday at 1:10pm.

Show Your Colours Day
On Friday 3rd July, we will wear the colours of the Aboriginal Flag (red, black and yellow) as well as the Torres Strait Islander Flag (blue, white and green). This will mark the end of our NAIDOC Week celebrations as well as the final day of term. Students are not required to bring a gold coin on this day.

Term 3 Dates
A reminder that students return to school next term on Tuesday 21st July.
On Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th July, parents and carers will be given the opportunity to meet with their child's teacher to raise any questions arising from the Semester 1 report. These meetings will also provide an opportunity to set academic and social goals for students across the remainder of the year. If you haven't returned your child's interview slip to their classroom teacher, please do this as soon as possible.

Year 5/6 Camp
Preparations for our Year 5/6 camp for Term 3 are almost finalised. Information will be sent home with students prior to the holidays.

Playground Meeting
Discussions around improvements to our school’s physical environment are gathering momentum. A playground meeting is planned for Monday 29th June at 4:30pm at our lunch shed area. All families and friends are welcome to attend.

Tomorrow
Good luck to Monika Garrity who will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St Vincent Pallotti Church on Thursday and also to the students representing our school at the Docker's Shield Football carnival at the Town Oval from 9:00am - 12:00pm.

Multicultural Dinner
Staff, students, families and friends are invited to attend the Multicultural Dinner at St Vincent Pallotti Church on Saturday 4th July from 6:30pm. BYO dinner, drinks and chairs and enjoy some great company and fine entertainment. The dinner is also an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of Fr Joel, who celebrates his Silver Jubilee - 25 years of Priesthood - next month.

School Fees
School fees will be reissued at the end of this week. A reminder that at least 50% of school fees should be paid by the end of this term. Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any queries or concerns.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

Our Future Leaders

Our Gifted and Talented program has been using research-backed tools and resources to prepare students for possible future careers. This diverse, challenging and differentiated program enables students to progress beyond standard curriculum requirements, so as to take risks and build knowledge and skills in a safe and flexible context. This term there has been a high focus on making STEM learning fun whilst teaching multiple subjects across the curriculum.

Students  are using Makers Empire 3D software to investigate ways to solve real life problems. Students have carried out a series of inquiry based investigations and experiments on ‘helping others'.

The first need students identified was assisting others in the playground to have a quiet and calming space to play in, as a result the Gifted and Talented Team created bubble wands that have been placed outside at recess and lunch for all to enjoy.

Currently, students are exploring the common problems and issues within our community. The Cumulative Task requires them to design a solution to a problem of their choice, using the research they had conducted into its human and environmental impacts. They are currently designing 3D printed solutions and we hope to have these ready by the end of term. Using the Makers Empire software has harness the power of 3D technology to make  learning fun whilst teaching students important Design Thinking, STEM and 21st-century skills.

Teaching Assistants
Our annual book fair has been operating in the library since last Monday. The choice of books available for purchase is of a high standard and appeal to all interests. It has been great to see the children’s excited faces as they choose their books!
As Teacher Assistants we get to listen to the children read on a regular basis, from Pre Primary to Year 6. As educators, to see the improvement across the years is incredibly satisfying!
There are many benefits to reading. Reading:
  • Reduces stress
  • Helps us build a better vocabulary
  • Stimulates imagination
  • Inspires up new ideas
  • Improves focus and concentration
  • Improves your memory
  • Improves our language skills
  • Gives us new knowledge
If you haven’t had the chance to have a visit the book fair, it will be in the library every day from 2.00-2.230pm until this Friday 26th June.
