Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

As we come to the end of Term 2, I would like to commend staff and students on their achievements, despite the obvious challenges with which we were confronted. In addition to some exceptional academic advances, it has been wonderful to witness the social gains made by students in showing kindness and compassion to others.

Farewell
With sadness we say goodbye to the Johnson/Purdie and Lesic families. Melina Johnson and her children Quintarnah, Ezmayah, Sierra and Chance are relocating to Wyndham while Danika and her parents Steve and Renee are moving to Broome. We thank both families for their valuable contributions to our school.

Congratulations Fr Joel
Yesterday we celebrated Fr Joel's Silver Jubilee (25 years as a Priest) with a morning tea, cards from each class and the presentation of a beautiful piece of artwork symbolising Fr Joel's time as a Priest in Kununurra. A dinner will be held at St Vincent Pallotti Church this Saturday night from 6:30pm. All families and friends are most welcome to come along (bring your own food and drinks).

Reminder
As parents and carers, we play a crucial role in the overall development of our children. It is important that we model the behaviour we expect to see from our children, including the words we use. Within the school grounds, we set high standards regarding the language we expect to hear from all students - whether they are speaking to their peers or an adult. These standards also apply to adults who enter our school grounds. Should you require further information, our Code of Conduct can be found on our website or copies are available from the office. Thank you for your support.

Visitor
On Monday we welcomed renowned bagpipe player Scott Hannah to our school. Scott was happy to take requests and we enjoyed listening to Amazing Grace and the theme from Star Wars. Unfortunately, Scott wasn't sure how to play the Collingwood theme song!

Good Luck
We wish Ms Megan Walters all the best as she completes her final teaching placement with the Year 3 class at the end of the week. Megan has formed strong connections with the students and she will be missed. We wish her all the very best with her future endeavours.

NAIDOC Week
Led by our ATAs, we have enjoyed a variety of NAIDOC Week activities. Beginning with the opening ceremony on Monday, students learnt about the theme for NAIDOC Week this year: Always Was, Always Will Be. Yesterday students participated in rotation activities and a number of fantastic pieces of art were created.  We look forward to more NAIDOC activities before our closing ceremony on Friday at 11:50am. Congratulations and thank you to all ATAs for providing engaging learning experiences.

Show Your Colours Day
Students are invited to wear the colours of the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Flags this Friday (red, black, yellow, white, green or blue). A gold coin donation is NOT required.

Reports
Reports were sent home with students today. I commend the teachers on providing detailed accounts about the learning journey of each student over this semester.

Term 3 Dates
A reminder that we begin Term 3 with a pupil free day: Monday 20th July. Students will return to school on Tuesday 22nd July.
On Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th July, parents and carers will be able to meet with their child's teacher to raise any questions arising from the Semester 1 report. These meetings will also provide an opportunity to set academic and social goals for the remainder of the year.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Ten Top Tips for Feeding School Aged Children

From the WA Department of Health

Follow these tips and encourage your kids to eat healthy.

Give your children a variety of different foods at all meals and snacks.

Snacks are important. Offer nutritious foods like bread, crackers, cheese, yoghurt and fruit.

Provide breakfast and allow time for your children to eat it.

Eat together as a family at least once a day.

Pack your child’s lunch from home. Involve your child in the selection and preparation from a range of healthy options.

Don’t make a fuss when your child refuses a new food, but try again several times.

Let your child tell you when they are full.

Encourage children to drink plain water when they are thirsty.

Involve children with planning and preparing healthy meals.

Plan physical activities for all the family to encourage a healthy balance between food eaten and energy needs.

School Fees were re-issued last week. Many of our families have either paid all their fees or are well on their way to having them paid in full by the end of Term 3.

School fees make an important contribution to providing your child with the best possible education.

Families who have a Health Care Card are asked to present it at the office for the appropriate discount on their tuition fees. If you are experiencing financial hardship, and are not eligible for the card, please make a time to see the Principal to discuss your individual circumstances.

ALL FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BY 25 SEPTEMBER UNLESS A PAYMENT PLAN HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE PRINCIPAL

We prefer card!

In these COVID times we prefer payment by card so that we don’t have to handle cash. There are EFTPOS machines in the office and Canteen. We accept most cards, including the Indue Card.

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

During Terms 1 and 2 we have continued to run the Seasons for Growth wellbeing program for students in Years 2, 4, 5 and 6. Despite the interruption halfway through the course due to Covid-19, all the students showed great enthusiasm about completing the eight week program. Along the way, several students have shared that the well-being classes have helped them reflect on their feelings, make good choices and know who to go to in difficult circumstances. Due to the success and feedback we will look to continue the program in the same class levels next term.

Digital Technology
Throughout Term 2 the Year 5/6 Class have been studying saltwater crocodiles in the Kimberley. Students researched and obtained data from various sources as well as interpreting and presenting that data using a variety of tools. Each student has an iPad to assist them with their tasks. The iPads have been utilised heavily for educational advancement and this project was no different.
In the last two weeks of school the students have started their new topic, emergency robots. They have commenced their research as well as utilising our newly purchased Sphero robots. The students have had an exciting time coding and driving the robots in anticipation of their Term 3 project.
