Term Two, Week Five

Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends,

This week, on Monday, we conducted our first online assembly led by Dale and Iona from Year 5/6. We will continue to follow this format until we are advised that we can recommence gathering for whole school assemblies. At the assembly, we announced that this Friday would be a casual dress and crazy hair day for all students. We ask all students to bring a gold coin donation which will go towards our Mini Vinnies program. If we are able to raise $500, Mr Roberts, Mr Absalom and Louis Taylor (Year 4/5) have agreed to have their heads shaved! To see this take place, extra donations (in addition to gold coins) are most welcome.

Sorry Day
Yesterday was Sorry Day. It was wonderful to see classes acknowledging this day by engaging in a variety of reflective and thought provoking activities.

Casual Clothes and Crazy Hair Day
Students are invited to colour their hair and/or wear casual clothes to school this Friday 29th May. Please bring a gold coin donation.

Long Weekend
A reminder that the school will be closed next Monday 1st June (WA Day) and Tuesday 2nd June (Catholic Day). We look forward to seeing students back at school on Wednesday 3rd June.

Reports
Teachers are currently working hard on compiling Semester One reports for students who have attended school regularly and were actively engaged in flexible/online learning activities when they were invited to work from home. Due to the disruption we encountered as a result of COVID-19, academic reports will look slightly different. Teachers will provide a comment regarding each child’s achievement in Religious Education, Maths, English, as well a general comment. Teachers will then indicate whether students are achieving above, at or below standard for each of the Key Learning Areas that have been taught in the classroom. We are hopeful that overall progress in specialist subjects can be reported on at the end of the year.

Sleep
It is imperative that children are sleeping between 10 and 12 hours each night to ensure they have the rest required to maximise their capabilities in the classroom. When children need to sleep during school hours, this places additional demands on teachers, ATAs and TAs. A sound sleep routine where children go to bed and wake up at the same time is critical, as is not having the distraction of screens (tvs, computers, iPhones, iPads and video games) in bedrooms when children should be sleeping.

School Choir
A big thank you to Mrs Matilda Kehl who has begun working with our school choir. Each even week after lunch, students in Years 3 - 6 will have the opportunity to gather and learn some new songs with the view of performing in front of audiences later in the year. Each odd week at the same time, Mrs Kehl will meet with interested students from Kindergarten - Year 2. Regular attendance at school and being able to demonstrate positive behaviour are the only pre-requisites for children who wish to join the choir. A talent for singing is a bonus!

School Photos
While our regular school photos have been cancelled for this year, we are looking at other options so that children and classes will still have the opportunity for their photo to be taken. Please stay tuned for further updates.

Cross Country
A big thank you to Mr Zahra who has been busy organising our school cross country event which is set to take place on Wednesday 17th June. Mr Zahra will be putting measures in place to adhere to the conditions we need to follow due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, at this stage, it will not be possible for parents and carers to be present at this event.

Congratulations
A big congratulations to Mrs Sophie Waideman and her husband Rod who welcomed “Thea Mavis” into the world last Sunday, a baby sister for Lucas.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Principal

Places to go

In Kununurra we’re incredibly lucky to be surrounded by nature’s playground. There are many outdoor places we can visit where children can run around, paddle a play boat or have a swim:

Swim Beach

Mirima National Park

Celebrity Tree Park

Valentine Springs

Spring Creek

Molly Springs

Harry’s Hole

Packsaddle Springs

Elephant Rock

Lake Argyle

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week

Classes have engaged in a variety of activities for Reconciliation Week. As Aboriginal Teaching Assistants we were able to share our own reflections on ‘Sorry Day’ with the students and what it means to us. We have also begun preparations for NAIDOC Week which will take place during the final week of this term. While we may be limited in not being able to leave the school grounds or gather as a whole school community, opportunities will be provided for students to try some bush tucker, look at old photos as we celebrate our school’s rich history and create some fantastic artwork.

Year 3 News
Wow, what a different start to the Term! It’s exciting to have everyone back. The children are getting lots of practise washing their hands. Let’s hope the worst is behind us and we can simply enjoy coming to school.
Year 3 welcomes two additions to our class: Tyler Ramsay (R) and Quade Storer (L) have joined us and we look forward to building new friendships. Next week we also welcome back Miss Megan Walters who will complete her final teaching practicum in our class.
We are settling back into our routine as best we can. I encourage children to borrow books from the library and take them home to read every night. We are fortunate that Bluearth returned last week and the children have certainly relished the extra physical activity. This will no doubt prepare them for cross country on the 17th July.
A small reminder: It would be helpful to the class if children could arrive on time, by 7.50am. If they’re late, not only do they miss out on the start of lessons, but it also distracts other students.
Thank you to Miss Judith for sharing her stolen generation experience when she spoke to us on Reconciliation day.
Mr David Ballingall
