Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

As per the correspondence sent home to families last week, as of Monday 18th May, all students are required to attend school unless they are unwell, have a medical referral to learn from home or live with a family member who is medically vulnerable. Students who have been approved to learn from home will continue to be supported in their learning by their classroom teacher. If this is the case, it is imperative that families communicate with the school regarding the most suitable mode of learning (online or hard copy work packs). It has been wonderful to see the vast majority of students return to school. I commend all staff on the additional efforts made in order to maintain a safe and hygienic work environment for students. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email should you have any queries: tim.hogan@cewa.edu.au

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Thanks to the generosity of our P & F, a number of students have used our new 3D printer under the guidance of Mrs Christopher. After designing a maze using ‘Makers Empire’ software, several students have printed their maze, with amazing results. Mrs Christopher will lead the staff in some professional development this afternoon where this and other P & F purchases, such as a class set of Sphero robots and six pairs of virtual reality goggles, will be explored with the view to how they can help maximise learning opportunities.

Reports
While no formal announcement has been made by Catholic Education WA about the format of Semester 1 reports, as a minimum, students from Pre-Primary - Year 6 will receive General, English and Mathematics comments highlighting their achievements, along with any areas for improvement over the remainder of the year. To assist teachers with this important work, they will be provided with a day away from the classroom where they can formulate these comments. When a final decision has been made regarding the official reporting format for Catholic Primary Schools in WA, parents and carers will be informed.

Services
Some of our external services returned to school this week or will be returning soon. These services include: Bluearth, Young Minds, the Earbus, Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists. Upon entering the school, practitioners are required to adhere to the enhanced cleaning and hygiene measures that the school has in place, which includes modifying activities/practices as required.

School Fees
Thank you to families who have been making regular school fee payments. If you are experiencing difficulties in paying your fees, please contact with Di Brooks or myself via phone or email to discuss your situation.

Catholic Day
A reminder that the school will be closed for our Catholic Day on Tuesday 2nd June. This day follows the WA Day public holiday on Monday 1st June.

Year 5/6
In addition to the leadership positions held by a number of students in the Year 5/6 class, additional groups have been formed as students consider ways in which they can be ‘active citizens’ both at school and within the community. While we are currently unable to visit the residents at Juniper, the ‘Community Connections’ group made cards for the residents that will be delivered at the end of the week. Plans are also in place for short music and dance videos, created by the students, to be shared with our friends at Juniper. Stay tuned for more updates regarding how our senior students are continuing to set a terrific example for others to follow.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Principal

St Joseph’s School Uniforms

At St Joseph’s School we take great pride in our appearance. The school uniform is also an important aspect of child health and safety. It is a requirement that all students wear a St Joseph’s uniform (including a hat with our logo) that is purchased from our uniform shop. Similar items bought elsewhere may not be worn to school.

Please note that our “no hat, no play” policy is enforced.

See our website for a full range of uniform items.

Uniforms may be purchased at any time from our office.

Places to go

In Kununurra we’re incredibly lucky to be surrounded by nature’s playground. There are many outdoor places we can visit where children can run around, paddle a play boat or have a swim:

Swim Beach

Mirima National Park

Celebrity Tree Park

Valentine Springs

Spring Creek

Molly Springs

Harry’s Hole

Packsaddle Springs

Elephant Rock

Lake Argyle

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

Helping Others during COVID-19

It’s been an interesting time for the Mini Vinnies because of COVID-19. With the current restrictions we have not been able to help the vulnerable people in Kununurra. However Mr Absalom and myself found time to  visit some families to see how they were coping. On the way back we called into Whitegum Park and dropped off sandwiches and water for our community people.

The Mini Vinnies students have directed their services into helping around the school. Each morning they assist with the breakfast program, which includes setting up and washing the dishes. In Year 5/6 Noah and Fletcher are lending a hand to keep the room clean. As the weather cools down we are giving out lots of warm clothes and some beanies courtesy of the Sunshine Charity Sewing Group in Queensland, who have been busy knitting and collecting second hand clothing for us. A very big thank you to Jenny Cronin, Jean Kozak, Liz Sawyer and the ladies.

Canteen News
It’s business as usual here at the canteen. We have a new menu for Term 2 and with the cooler weather, more students are ordering spaghetti/baked bean tubs for recess. For just $1.50, this includes bread fingers - a great warm treat on these cold mornings.
I have recently completed the COVID-19 online training and our cleaning/social distancing practices are in place. For the time being, we will still be using disposable cutlery and there will be no slinky apples until Term 3. I would like to commend the students on their behaviour and for lining up appropriately for the ever-popular icy pole/jelly cups each Friday. For parents wanting to order recess and lunch for their children, please see the staff on duty at the front gate between 7:30am - 8:00am each morning. A menu, lunch bags and EFTPOS machine are available for your convenience. If you would like to set up an account, please call the office and speak with Ms Eileen to arrange this. We will put the menu on Facebook and in the newsletter for ease of ordering. Daily specials are still available and I will endeavour to give these specials to staff so that information can be passed on to students in their classrooms.
We are still collecting bread tags so please keep them coming. We have put lids on hold for now as the company taking them have stopped due to the pandemic. I will keep you up to date as this changes.
If you would like to see different items for sale in the canteen or if you have suggestions for the menu, please email the school. Remember—this is your canteen!
Ms Kris

This week’s special:
$1 frozen yoghurts available at recess and lunch.
