Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

We look forward to acknowledging all Fathers and Special Men at our Father’s Day Breakfast this Friday at 7:00am. For catering purposes, it is important that we are aware of the numbers attending. If you are yet to do so, please contact our office.

First Holy Communion
Congratulations to Monika Garrity, Nelly Melpi and Charlotte Hogan who received the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time at Mass on Sunday. A special thank you to Mr Roberts, Mr Absalom, Sr Julianne and Fr Joel for preparing the students so well.

End of Day Pick-Up
A reminder that cars must be parked before students can be picked up at the end of the day. Children are not permitted to enter vehicles that are idling on the road. This is a matter of safety for children and other road users. Thanks in anticipation of your support and understanding.

COVID-19
Our policy regarding COVID-19 testing remains that should an individual (who resides in the same house as one of our students) be tested for COVID-19, the student (or students) need to remain at home until a negative result for that individual has been received. In addition, any students who have a high temperature or are experiencing flu like symptoms should not be sent to school.

School Disco
We are looking forward to our School Disco next Friday 11th September from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. A reminder that students will not be permitted entry into the disco without a signed permission slip and payment of $5. We are looking for parents and friends to assist with cooking the BBQ so if you are available, please contact the office. Due to the limited capacity of our library, the Disco is open to St Joseph’s students only.

Kindergarten Enrolments
Enrolment interviews for Kindergarten 2020 will take place during the final two weeks of this term. Enrolments need to be completed by Friday 18th September so that we can begin planning for next year. Open days will be held next Wednesday 9th September and Wednesday 23rd September from 8:30am - 10:30am. This will be an opportunity for prospective parents and carers to meet with the Kindergarten staff and ask questions.

Thank you
Many thanks to World Literacy Foundation Ambassador Caroline Constant who spoke to students in Years 1 - 6 last Thursday. Caroline delivered a positive message regarding the importance of Literacy in developing knowledge and self confidence in children as they grow into life long learners.

Year 4 Camp
A date has been set for the Year 4 camp. Students will enjoy a boat cruise and a swim at Lake Argyle on Friday 18th September before returning to school in the afternoon. They will then participate in some fun, cooperative activities. Students will spend the night in our Library before being picked up by parents or carers on Saturday morning. The cost of the camp is $20. Should you have any queries, please contact Mr Matthew Absalom.

Congratulations
Well done to Year 5 student Jonas Pufke (and his older brother Dominik) who won the ‘Enticer’ Adventure Race held at Lake Argyle in a time of 1:04:14. Congratulations to all other St Joseph’s students and families who competed.

School Fees
A REMINDER THAT ALL FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BY 25 SEPTEMBER UNLESS A PAYMENT PLAN HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE PRINCIPAL
Many of our families have either paid all their fees or are well on their way to having them paid in full by the end of Term 3 - THANK YOU.

Families who have a Health Care Card are asked to present it at the office for the appropriate discount on their tuition fees. If you are experiencing financial hardship, and are not eligible for the card, please make a time to see the Principal to discuss your individual circumstances.
School fees make an important contribution to providing your child with the best possible education.

We prefer card!

In these COVID times we prefer payment by card so that we don’t have to handle cash. There are EFTPOS machines in the office and Canteen. We accept most cards, including the Indue Card.

We will continue to work on reducing our waste and recycling our rubbish this term.

It has been a pleasure getting to know the students and staff in Pre-Primary this term. We have focussed on following routines, active listening, mat time manners and building strong friendships. The Pre-Primary students are getting ready for their assembly item next week and have been practising really hard. They are very excited about performing it for the school community.

This term in Pre-Primary we have had some fun cooking experiences. We made raspberry and white chocolate muffins as a class reward and zucchini slice to support our healthy lifestyles lessons. In Maths we have been learning about days of the week, money and subtraction. The students have been talking lots about the days of the week and loved playing shop with Miss Ros. In Literacy they have been consolidating their letter/sound knowledge and are beginning to read and write independently. The success and progress we have made has been very rewarding. I am looking forward to what the rest of the year brings for us.

Specialist Subjects
Technology
Students have been looking at how and why things are designed to ensure they meet their purpose. They have also been examining how to make new designs by merging original concepts with old ideas and refabrication .
The Year 4/5 students are well into designing a strong bridge for their Sphero robots to safely cross. An added bonus will be a weight challenge at the end!
Students in Year 2 are creating a town and, in small groups, a home and narrative for their Spheros. They must meet the needs and dimensions of their Sphero and, using block coding, create a story in which the Sphero moves about the town.
Students from Kindy to Year 1 have been creating farms. The Spheros are driven around the farm to feed, water and check the health of their animals. Students have also been testing their dexterity in small groups with ten-pin bowling and obstacle courses.

Music
Students across all years have been playing tuned and untuned percussion. They have played a range of known and unknown songs, individually and in small groups.
Students are learning about note names and timing, stick notation and creating their own rhythms. They have enjoyed creating and recreating their own rhythms, then swapping with their peers to play and clap those rhythms. They have enjoyed experimenting with instruments and sounds and have really taken to the boomwhackers!
In singing we have focussed on timing and pitch, using a range of mainstream songs and simple known songs. Students are working towards using Solfa hand signs for improving pitch accuracy and building harmonic awareness, and learning to distinguish pitch in nursery rhymes.
