Dear Families and Friends

It was terrific to see so many Dads and special men at our Father's Day breakfast last Friday. A big thank you to Miss Kris in the canteen for serving up a delicious breakfast. We hope that all our dads and special men enjoyed a restful weekend spent with their loved ones.

School Disco
All is in readiness for our School Disco which in our library from 5:30pm-7:30pm this Friday. The children were reminded of the following points at our Monday morning assembly:

  • Children must be in the library or undercover area at all times.
  • Pick up and drop off will be available for children who regularly catch the St Joseph's school bus. If this service is required, please make sure children are ready at 5:00pm. Drop offs will take place between 7:30pm - 8:00pm

A number of students have expressed an interest in helping to set up for the disco on Friday after school. If you are happy for your child to assist, please email: tim.hogan@cewa.edu.au.

Reminders

This Friday!

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2020

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

Walking with them the whole way to school.

If they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop.

If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 15 May 2020!

Sr Julianne is collecting used stamps for the Sisters of St Joseph Peruvian mission. These are put with collections from many other schools and parishes, and sold at auctions. Over $20,000 gets raised each year. Please leave in the box at the front office.

We prefer card!

In these COVID times we prefer payment by card so that we don’t have to handle cash. There are EFTPOS machines in the office and Canteen. We accept most cards, including the Indue Card.

We will continue to work on reducing our waste and recycling our rubbish this term.

What a busy Term 3 it has been in Year 4/5! Students have put their caring nature on display by writing beautiful letters to aged care residents in Victoria who haven’t seen their family members in over six months. They have been able to empathise and understand how tough it would be for Victorians in these unprecedented times and have demonstrated gratitude that in Western Australia we don’t currently have severe restrictions imposed on us. We understand that although it is a small gesture, it will make a big impact on an aged care resident’s life. As Mary McKillop said, “Never see a need without doing something about it.”

Next week, Year 4 students will be off to Lake Argyle for a swim and a boat cruise for their annual camp. They will arrive back at school for some afternoon activities, dinner and a movie followed by a sleep-over in the library and pancakes for breakfast the following morning. Could all students please return their signed permission slip with $20. We thank the P&F for their donation towards our Year 4 camp.

Year 2 News
At the end of Term 1, before COVID hit, Year 1 and 2 collaborated with a vision to bring the school garden back to life again! Not only has it been such a wonderful way to stay connected through COVID, but it has been a rich learning experience for all. We have researched information about plants, designed the garden, planted, watered, fertilised and weeded. It was very rewarding to cook with the fresh produce we grew!
School gardens are a great way to learn about nutrition. We have made the connection between growing food and good diets, developed life skills and increased our environmental awareness. It has also strengthened our understanding and awareness of food and biodiversity, while practising teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills in an interesting setting.
The garden has been a great way for students to take a break from our busy classrooms. Many studies indicate that gardening has long term effects on health and wellbeing, as it’s calming, reduces blood pressure and decreases the stress hormone cortisol.
Here are some of the things Year 2 have learnt from the garden project:

  • It needs lots of care to help it grow and you need to spend a lot of time in the garden ~ Quilla
  • You have to pull out the weeds ~ Edward
  • It is good exercise ~ Violet
  • You can pick the tomatoes when they are ready ~ Ava
  • We grew watermelon, tomatoes, pumpkins, spaghetti squash ~ Anthony
  • You need to fertilise the plants so they can grow ~ Tarryn
  • It takes a lot of time to grow and get fruit ~ Tarryn
  • Plants are great but you need to look after them or they will die, you don’t want them to die because you will get sad ~ Zantalia
  • When tomatoes are red that means they are ready ~ Chazz
  • You need to pick the watermelon when it is very hard, you need to tap on it and it will make a thump sound- that means it is ready ~ Reuben
  • You can get seeds out of the dried sunflower heads ~ Reuben
  • You need to mind your garden every week ~ Ruth
  • We put the sunflowers in a vase in the classroom – Ruth
  • We know the life cycle of a plant ~ Hugh
  • It takes a lot of hard work ~ Hugh
  • It is fun picking tomatoes ~ Kendrick
  • If we don’t water the plants it will die ~ Carmel
  • You can see lady bugs on the flowers ~ Ava
  • Plants need water so they can grow ~ Ella-May
It has been fantastic to see all classes get use out of the garden and have the opportunity to link the school garden to everyday learning.
