Term 3, Week 7

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend, it was certainly a nice break in what has been a very busy term. On Tuesday morning we gathered as a whole school where we focussed on demonstrating appropriate behaviour during assemblies. The children were able to show us what the behaviour expectations are during our whole school assemblies. We discussed how to “Be Responsible” at school as part of our reflection on the school BOABS. The children gave great examples of how they could be responsible during different times throughout the school day and in different places within the school.

The Book Fair has been running each afternoon this week and there was great excitement from the students who visited with their families. The fair will continue to run each afternoon this week. The school receives a portion of the profits from the book fair which we use to purchase more books for the school, so a win/win for all! Thank you to all the families who came along to our Stories under the stars night, it was a great success! Thank you to the parents who manned the BBQ ensuring everyone was well fed. Thanks to everyone who read to us on the night. Thanks to all the staff who supported the evening helping set up and pack away. We look forward to celebrating all our favourite book characters at our parade this Friday morning at 8am.

This week Year 5/6 were lucky enough to visit the Manbijim Cotton Farm. It was a great excursion and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to Mary Mcphee and Matt Stott for offering to host the Year 5/6 and Year 4/5 excursions. The excursion provided the students the opportunity to learn how the land is being used for producing food and goods from a traditional and contemporary perspective. We have never seen students so excited about Cotton and Corn!

Next week on Wednesday straight after school the P&F are keen to meet with any parents who are interested in finding out more about the school’s sustainability and nature play projects. Please feel free to drop in and learn more about what is going on in these areas.

Also, next week we welcome volunteers from Youth with a Mission (YWAM). We have been lucky enough to have YWAM volunteers visit our school a number of times over the last few years and their visits are always thoroughly enjoyed by students and staff.

This is my last week working on the ground at St Joseph’s. As of next week, I will continue in my role as Principal but work remotely from Perth for the remainder of the term. Assistant Principal Shaun Joseph will lead the school on a daily basis in my absence.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

BOOK  WEEK  PARADE  -  THIS  FRIDAY

Term 3 in Year 3

This term the Year 3 class have been immersing themselves into the wonderful world of poetry. We have learnt a range of poetry techniques such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, rhyming and personification. Our unit was integrated with Religion, and we wrote many poems about God’s creation.

We were lucky enough to go on an excursion to Celebrity Tree Park last week and enjoy the morning out in nature, a place where we can become closer to God. We saw lots of different wildlife, some big and some small. We saw a crocodile, a goanna, red finches, a mother bowerbird and her babies along with their nest. We then enjoyed a shared morning tea under the shady trees.

Since returning from our excursion we have created Haiku poems about the nature in Celebrity Tree Park. Haiku poems are three lined poems with a total of 17 syllables. Line one has 5 syllables, line two has 7 syllables and line three has 5 syllables. They then presented their poems on book creator. Below are some of the poems the Year 3’s made.

Now that the world has opened back up, in Geography, we renewed our passports and have been travelling around the world! We have travelled to nearly every continent this term, we have travelled to Australia, Brazil (South America), France (Europe), Singapore (Asia) and Zambia (Africa). On our visits we have learnt how to say hello in each different language, the settlement type, population, climate, traditions and natural resources.

Mrs Morgan took us to Singapore, here she shared information about where she came from, traditions in her family and from her culture and even taught us a song in Mandarin! Over the next couple of weeks we will be creating our own travel brochures to a country of their choice.

Pre-Primary Update

This term has been wonderful in Pre-Primary we have been busy learning lots of new things. In Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) which consists of Geography and History. This term we were focusing on geography and students had the opportunity to pose and respond to 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where' and 'why' questions. The Pre-Primary students were given the opportunity to explore, play and investigate, and communicate their understandings through activities such as writing, painting, constructions or role-plays and some wonderful On-Country learning experiences. We focused on developing students' curiosity of their personal world, with connections made between the early childhood setting and the local community by visiting Mirima National Park, Ski Beach and Celebrity Tree Park. This gives the students a developing sense of identity and belonging, students investigated the features of familiar places, why and how places are cared for, and explored what makes a place special.

This week is book week, and it is always an exciting week please feel welcome to come into the classroom and see what we have created for book week and all the fun activities we get up to.
