Term 3, Week 6

August 24, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have had another great week of learning at St Joseph’s. It is wonderful to see our attendance rates increase and to have students attending school more consistently. If you need help getting your child to school please let us know and we are very willing to work in partnership with you to make sure your child attends school each day.

Thank you to all those families who have paid their school fees. School fees make an important contribution to our school and allow us to adequately resource our classrooms. If you are yet to pay your school fees you can contact the office to organise a payment plan. If you are a concession card holder you may be entitled to a reduction of your fees also so, please contact the office for more information.

Both Pre-Primary and Year 3 have been to Celebrity Tree Park on excursion in the last week. Both classes enjoyed exploring the park and learning about the flora and fauna that call the park home. They also were able to enjoy a picnic together and of course the playground got a good work out!

Kindy 2023 enrolments are open. If you have a child who is eligible for Kindy next year pop into the office and collect an enrolment pack. Having your child enrolled in Kindy for next year will help us to plan accordingly and organise staffing. If you are interested in learning more about Kindy at St Joseph’s please contact the front office to organise a time to visit the class or speak with myself about the Kindy program. We look forward to welcoming enrolled Kindy students for 2023 to Orientation which is scheduled for the 4th November, 8.30 to 10am.

Next week we look forward to celebrating Book Week, “Dreaming with eyes open”. On Wednesday afternoon we invite all parents/carers to join us for our Stories under the stars evening from 5pm. Come and enjoy listening to our different story tellers and grab a sausage sizzle whilst you are there.  If you have a special story that you love reading to your children and would like to share with everyone, please get in touch with your classroom teacher so we can include you in the reading rotation for the night.  On Thursday the teachers are organising rotations to celebrate our love of books and on Friday everyone is invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We will have a mini dress up parade at 8am in the lunch shed area. The Scholastic Book Fair will run from Tuesday to Friday in the library and available for students and their families to purchase books after school each afternoon.

If you didn’t collect your school photos last week they are available for collection from the front office this week.

Just a reminder that there is no school for staff and students on Monday 29th August as we are having our Catholic Day.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

What's been happening in... KINDY

This term we have been learning about:

- Bugs!! We are learning about different bugs and found out that bugs have three body parts.

- Recognising letters in our name and are enjoying tracing and making our names with magnetic letters..

We also love our new game of spelling out our names using fly swats.

Picture of one child with their name

- The tinker table - We have made cars and other fun stuff with the wood, nails and screws. We have also been learning how to use the hammers and screwdrivers safely.

- Arts n crafts- We have made different bugs out of paint and cards. Our favourite has been the butterfly headband.

And lots of outside play.

Year 4-5

In Religious Education we are learning about Holy Communion. Last Friday year 4/5 visited our parish church, St Vincent Pallotti, in Kununurra. For some of the children, it was their first time in the church. We discussed and looked at all the different places and items in the church. Sister Julianne discussed with us all the important elements of Mass, especially Holy Communion. One of our student's had a go at receiving the unconsecrated host (bread), as a practice for her first Holy Communion. It was a very interesting time out and the children asked lots of good questions. Many thanks to Sister Julianne for her bus driving and suggestion for this mini-excursion to our church.

Specialist Update

We have had a cracking term so far, with many exciting events at St Joseph’s.

We enjoyed an exciting and successful Athletics Carnival in week 2. We want to thank everyone for your support and assistance during this time. Everyone in the community worked hard to create a wonderful day for the students, and we couldn’t be prouder. We would again like to thank Matt from Garnduwa for your support and assistance. Matt’s efficiency with the track events helped create a seamless day.  The Athletics Carnival Presentation was held in week 3 on Friday at our assembly. Again, we are really proud of the student’s attitudes as we know how much this means to them. Well done to the winning faction, Ivanhoe, and to all of the factions for your excellent resilience, hard work, and excellent sportsmanship on the day.

We have also been lucky and had the chance to participate in two incursions. The first incursion was hosted after school by Tennis West in week 3, and it looked like the students had a ball! Not only did we see excellent engagement with the workshop, but we saw great progression in the students' skills in the following sport sessions. Thank you to Remote Tennis for an engaging and educational workshop.

The second incursion was in the morning of week 3 during class time. We were lucky to have the opportunity to learn football skills from East Kimberley boy of the Claremont Tigers, Lawrence Evans. Not only did Lawrence, and Senior Coach Ash Prescott, as well as Jason Carter give us their time, they donated a number of modified footballs to the school. We are so grateful for this experience and the generous gifts. Please take a look at some of the amazing photographs captured on the day, by their in-house photographer Salty Vines. We have commenced football in sport this week and it’s heart-warming to see the smiles, enthusiasm and determination in the children.

In other news, we have been learning to play the Ukulele in Music. It’s really inspiring to see the students' progress, as they engage with something that is new and quite challenging. Did you know that Music has maths in it? Music has a number of social, emotional, and cognitive benefits on children, and we are really proud of how well the students are engaging with something tricky and using a growth mindset to improve their practice and have a little fun too!

We feel blessed to be a part of such a strong and spiritual community, whose heart is in the right place.

Thanks, and may God bless you, Matilda and Eleanor.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Last week the year 5/6 students went on camp at Crossing Falls here in Kununurra. While on camp the students had some fantastic opportunities to be involved in abseiling, canoeing, exploring and visiting some very old and amazing indigenous rock art sites. All students had a great time, were extremely well behaved and engaged in all activities with great gusto.  Please have a look at some of the photos we have included of our student's adventures out in the wilderness. A big thank you to the Year 5/6 team for all their organisation and assistance on camp.  A special mention goes out to Miss Deb and Mr Jamie for their incredible cooking skills in the camp kitchen.

Thank you also to all families for your assistance and coordination with Miss Roberts in making sure all tents and sleeping gear were sorted for the camp. Lastly a big thank you the Macka and his team for organising the fabulous events over the three days.
