Term 3, Week 5

August 17, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

It is officially the half way point of the term! We started this week with a liturgy at our Monday morning assembly to mark the Feast of the Assumption of Mary which is a holy day of obligation observed every year on August 15th. We spent time reflecting on the gift of Mary and how she teaches us to be open to and willing to accept God’s plans for us.

Our Year 5/6 students are off to camp as of Tuesday. They are going to spend two nights at Maxwell Campground here in Kununurra. During this time, they will participate in team building games, canoeing and lots of other fun activities. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return. Thanks to Mr Shaun, Mr Jamie and Miss Deb for accompanying the students to camp. Thanks, Mrs Roberts, for all your preparation and organising during the lead up to camp.

It was great to see so many families attend our afternoon tea and open classroom event last week. Thanks for coming down and being involved. There has been lots of other great things happening in the school this term. We are very happy to have Mandy from the Community Garden working with classes each week on Wednesday and Friday. As well as improving the gardens around the school Mandy is teaching the students the Principles of Permaculture. We also look forward to developing a bush regeneration project for the bush block out the back of the senior classrooms. Pre-Primary have been on their second excursion to Ski Beach and Year 5/6 were lucky enough to visit Kangaroo Haven.

Last week we also welcomed Therese Clancy to the school to begin handover for her role as Principal. It was a great opportunity for her to experience St Joseph’s firsthand and meet the students and some of their families. Therese looks forward to returning in Term 4 and getting to know the rest of the school community. In other staffing news, this week we welcomed Veronique Lambe to the role of AFAFE Playgroup support worker. Veronique brings with her many years of experience working in the Early Years space and we look forward to her joining the team at AFAFE. Sadly, we have had some staff resignations also. Rebecca Exell has resigned from her position as Teaching Assistant at our school. We have enjoyed having Bec as a member of staff and wish her all the best in her new endeavours. Matilda Kehl has also resigned from her Teaching position at the school and is finishing up at the end of this term. Matilda has done a wonderful job leading our specialist program over the past few years. We wish Matilda and Bec all the best on their new endeavours. We look forward to officially farewelling both of these staff members before the end of the term.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lee-Lee Morgan, Kimberley McLaughlin, Emma Walker and Leigh Pindan who are all graduating from their studies with the University of Notre Dame this week. Undertaking study whilst working is a big commitment and these staff members have done an amazing job to complete everything that was required of them. They are wonderful role models for all our students, and we are so lucky to have them as part of the St Joseph’s Team.

School Photos have just arrived at school! These are so precious and we appreciate how much they cost so we would like to only hand them out to parents/carers. Teachers will endeavour to catch parents/carers at morning and afternoon drop offs. If we don’t catch you this week then you can pick your photos up from the front office between 7.30 and 3.30pm next week.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Miss Gabby

Principal

Hello Families.

AFAFE Team are excited to introduce our new team member, Veronique Lambe. She has a lot of experience and we look forward to the many gifts she brings to the group.

We are looking at the weather and the sky with Language Nest and have been painting rainbows and talking about colours and our wonderful world of changing seasons.

We have been enjoying adventures at Celebrity Tree Park in the beautiful dry season sun and having fun playing at Pindan in our shared Playgroup with the Stepping Stones team.

Gen from Wunan is attending playgroup on Tuesdays and some Mums are doing driving lessons with Gen and she is also assisting with any other ID and forms that need attention.

We look forward to exploring in the community garden and play with Mandy and continuing our learning journey with the families in our community.

Mary Mackillop's Feast Day

Last week we celebrated the Feast Day of Mary Mackillop.

She died on August 8th 1909. Mary was a special lady for our school as she founded the group called ‘Sisters of St Joseph’ who, with the local Miriwoong people, founded our school.

She’s our patron saint.

The children participated in rotations on the Tuesday where they did a activities that reflected Mary Mackillop. Mary loved to ride on horses, the students also made Mary Mackillop with paper plates and scrap material. We then shared in a whole school lunch on the grass area after out Liturgy. It was a marvelous celebration.

Last Friday we had a visit from Food bank, delivering a Food Sensations program. The children took part in healthy cooking sessions as well as learning about health and nutrition.

Their visit also gave teachers some new resources to continue to implement nutrition education in the classroom. This is essential to ensure that students retain information and are supported to make healthy choices into the future.

Below is two recipes the children made, that you might like to make at home.

School photos are here.

We know they are precious and cost a lot of money so they will only be handed out to parents. Please see your child's teacher or come to the school office between 7.30-3.30 to collect.
