Term 3, Week 4

August 9, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we are all very excited to celebrate the Feast of Mary MacKillop. As you know Mary is Australia’s first Saint and a patron for our school. We are so lucky to have our very own Josephite Sister working with us at school and this week we give thanks for Sr Julianne and for all she does for our school and our community. Mary is a wonderful example for our students and she teaches all of us to “Never see a need without doing something about it!” We look forward to sharing our celebrations with you.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we are very much looking forward to welcoming our families into school for our first afternoon tea and open classrooms of the year. This will take place straight after school from 2-3pm. So please come along have a look at your child’s work and have a chat with their teachers. Year 5/6 parents are invited to attend a camp information meeting in the 5/6 classroom at 2.30pm.

This week we welcomed Diana Jansz back to our school to work with our Support Staff on fulfilling their accreditation requirements. They completed an accreditation module on the Old Testament on Monday and will work with Diana again on Wednesday to complete their Orientation.

We have also welcomed Therese Clancy to school this week who is the incoming Principal from Term 4 2022 to Term 4 2023. Therese is here to begin the handover process with myself and more importantly get to know the students, staff and families within our school community. She looks forward to getting to meet you during her time here this week. We are very pleased to welcome Tiffanee Dixon to our school community this week. Miss Tiff is the new Teaching Assistant in the Year One classroom working in there till the end of the year.

There has been lots of interest in Book Week so far and we wanted to let you know that we have scheduled Book Week for Week 7 which is the week beginning 30th August. The theme for this year is “Dreaming with eyes open” and whilst we are still finalising all activities for that week we can confirm we will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair and we will have our favourite book character parade on Friday, so start working on your costumes!

Just a reminder Year 3 and Year 4/5 will be presenting assembly items at our assembly this Friday at 1.20pm, parents/carers of those students are invited to attend. Also please mark in your calendars that there is no School on Monday 29th August as we are having our Catholic Day then.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Miss Gabby

Principal

CANTEEN CLOSED THIS FRIDAY 12TH AUGUST

Mrs Morgan TA Year 3

All the students were immersed in the NAIDOC activities at the end of Term 2. Our class did a special art lesson that involved painting dried leaves using red, yellow and black. The varied designs were so effective that we decorated them around our Acknowledgement of Country poster and is proudly displayed on our classroom wall.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be enthusiastically practising for our assembly item to show off our drama skills! I look forward to assisting our students with the preparations.

We have another busy term filled with more wonderful learning, including some of the students who are taking part in MacqLit. I am anticipating great results from the program. We look forward to the upcoming events with Daffodil Day, Mary Mackillop Feast Day and the Book Week parade.

So much fun to be had at school, as well as to learn and play!

Macqlit Update

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since we have had a chance to update everyone on how our MacqLit program is travelling at St joseph's School.  A huge thank you to our dedicated MacqLit teachers, who plan and work hard to make sure all students have the best access to the program here at the school.

We are very excited with the progress being made in all our MacqLit groups in Semester One and are looking forward to the first group of students completing the MacqLit program by the end of 2022. There has been a fresh influx of new students to the program in our level A, B and C groups, which gives more students the opportunity to improve their reading, comprehension and spelling.  We continue to be very proud of our students, who have worked hard on improving their reading skills over the first half of the year.

We are excited to say that all students passed their assessments in our last round and have progressed to the next levels. The goal for students in MacqLit is to progress through 4 MacqLit levels per year, which roughly equates to between 8 to 15 levels in reading.  This significant intervention is a powerful way to have students learn how to read and spell fluently.

With a few interruptions over the last two terms, we are looking forward to having less disruptions to the program moving forward into the second half of the year and seeing all our students move forward in reading and spelling.

As always if you would like to talk about how your child is progressing in MacqLit, please contact the school and speak to Shaun Joseph
