Term 3, Week 3
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a busy start to the term we have had. As you might be aware we have been suffering from lots of illnesses throughout the school which has resulted in lots of staff absences. We have continued to prioritise the business of learning and have worked incredibly hard to minimise the impact on students. This has been possible because of the dedicated staff we have at our school who are always putting the needs of our students first.
We had a great Athletics Carnival last Friday and it was wonderful to observe such positive attitudes and good sportsmanship from all our students on the day. Thank you to Mrs Kehl for her leadership and coordination of the day and the support of her student teacher Miss Eleanour. Thank you to all the staff who made the day such a huge success and thanks to those parents/carers who jumped in and helped out with different events during the day. I would also like to say thanks to Matt from Garnduwa who spent the day supporting our carnival. We look forward to our Athletics Carnival presentation this Friday at a special assembly. All parents/carers are invited to join us in the Library at 1.30pm to hear who the champion boys and girls from the day were as well as the overall faction winners.
Last week we were lucky enough to have all students attend the Beezotted Bee workshops presented by Matthew and Juliet Middleton. The kids loved the interactive workshop and learning all about stingless bees. Thank you to the Middelton’s for donating their time and sharing their love of Bees with our school community.
We have also had lots of visitors in our school this term already. We have had consultants from the Catholic Education Office in Broome coming to work with our teachers in the areas of Literacy, Students with Disability, Boarding and Digital Learning. The consultants work alongside teachers and students to support the learning that happens in our school and ensure we are doing everything we can to provide the best educational opportunities for each student.
Next week we look forward to holding our first Open Classroom/Parent/Teacher afternoon tea of the year. We have missed having parents in our school and our classrooms this year and would like the opportunity to catch up with all our parents and share with you what’s been happening in our classrooms. We would love you to join us on Wednesday 10th August from 2 to 3pm. We will have some afternoon tea set up on the front lawn and then we invite you to visit your children’s classrooms, look at some of their work and talk with their teachers.
Next week we will also be celebrating the Feast of Mary Mackillop on Tuesday. Our celebrations for the day include a whole school competition for the cleanest classroom, a liturgy at 11am and then rotations from 11.30am till the end of the day. Some of our rotations include games Mary would have played with her students, making Mary Mackillop puppets and making symbols from Mary’s life out of salt dough. You are very welcome to join us for these celebrations.
This week our students in Year 3 and 5 are participating in the Bishop’s Religious Literacy Assessment. We like to think of this as NAPLAN for religion and it is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in the subject of Religious Education. The students complete the online assessment using the school ipads and the data from these assessments helps to inform the teaching of religion and identify any school priorities. The results of the assessment will be shared with parents/carers later in the term.
We have had a number of positive cases of COVID in the school again this term. Catholic Education are strongly encouraging staff and students to where masks when indoors and unable to physically distance. We are reminding students to practice good hygiene and we ask you to please keep unwell children home from school and only send them to school when they are symptom free. CEWA have made available 20 RAT tests per family so if you would like to collect some then please pick these up from the front office between 7.30am and 3.30pm.
This Friday is Census Day for all schools. Both the State and Federal Census are taking place as well as an internal CEWA Collection of statistics. Census day is really important for our school as we rely heavily on funding from both the State and Federal government to adequately resource our school. We ask that all students come to school every day but in particular on Friday. If your child is absent please inform their teacher or the front office of the reason for their absence.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Miss Gabby
Principal
