Term 2, Week 10
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
Here we are at the end of Term 2, the end of Semester One and what a busy and unexpected start to the year. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the staff at St Joseph’s for their flexibility, diligence and professionalism as we navigated some really challenging experiences this year. Thank you to all the parents and carers who have worked in partnership with the school over the course of the semester. And lastly thank you to our wonderful students who have shown how resilient and adaptable they are. I hope you all have a relaxing and refreshing school holidays, a time spent with family and friends enjoying the beautiful weather we are experiencing at the moment. We look forward to welcoming both staff and students back for Term 3 on Monday 18th July 2022.
This week we have enjoyed celebrating NAIDOC week as a whole school community. Monday we had our march around school singing our very own Get up! Stand up! Show up! Song. We then enjoyed a sports afternoon with a student versus adults Basketball match and class verse class Tug O War. Thank you to all the parents who came along to play and the staff that jumped in to make up the team. Thank you to Matt from Garnduwa who came along and umpired the basketball game for us. Congratulations to Daisy’s Dad Luke on being named as the adults' team's Most Valuable Player (MVP). Congratulations to Louis Taylor and Quinlyn Ramsay on being named the student’s team MVP’s and to Poppy Cohen on being named Best and Fairest. On Tuesday and Wednesday students in PP to Year 6 rotated through different activities prepared by the Aboriginal Teaching Assistants and on Thursday we have rescheduled our march from school to Whitegum Park and then we will have our closing liturgy in the Library followed by a picnic lunch on the front lawn.
This term we have begun working with Mandy Milburn from the Kununurra Community Garden on our own school garden projects. So far students from Year 1 to Year 6 have spent time in the different garden spaces around the school, learning about the Principles of Permaculture. With Mandy’s assistance we are looking at developing a sustainable garden for our school that can be utilised all year round. So far students have been spending time developing the garden at the back of the Year 1 classroom, as well as doing some planting in our colourful garden beds and establishing more gardens out the back of the Year 4/5 classroom. We are looking forward to continuing this work, learning more about the Permaculture principles and embedding our work on La Dauto Si and Pope Francis’ call to care for the earth. If any parents are keen to be involved in this work, we would love to have your input so please let us know.
We have our last assembly for this term on Friday at 1:20pm. Our Pre-Primary class have prepared an assembly item and look forward to sharing it with us. Pre-Primary parents only are invited to attend this assembly.
Enjoy the rest of the week!
Miss Gabby
Principal
