Term 2, Week 9
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week Sr Julianne and I travelled to Perth to attend Evangelisation Planning days at the Catholic Education Office in Leederville. Jesus gave his Church community the mission of proclaiming his Gospel, or Good News of Salvation, to all, and baptising all who believed. In practice, this means that its mission is to share in his mission. The Church’s basic task is to call all to enter into ever-deepening relationship with God by repenting and believing in Jesus Christ and the Good News he proclaimed. The purpose of the Catholic school is to play an important part in the Church’s mission of Evangelisation. The school’s Evangelisation plan identifies priorities for both student and staff formation. It is developed by the Principal and leadership team and establishes a number of goals for the school to work towards achieving over a three year period. This is an opportunity to build on the many Catholic rituals, practices and opportunities for catechesis that are already happening in the school. We look forward to sharing the school’s new Evangelisation Plan with the community once it is finalised.
Last week we had a wonderful truck incursion organised by Miss Ashlee and provided by Charmaine and Hollie’s parents, Troy and Yasmin. The kids really enjoyed exploring the truck and I just wanted to say a big thank you on behalf of the whole school to Yasmin and Troy for sharing their truck, knowledge and time with all of our classes.
On Monday we had another incursion organised by Mrs. Roberts all about cane toads and what the team from Parks and Wildlife are doing to protect native species. There were taxidermy cane toads and even a live snake! Before the end of term there are excursions planned to Waringarri Art Centre, Mirima National Park and Kangaroo Haven. Incursions and Excursions are an engaging and interesting way of extending the learning that happens within our classes. We look forward to sharing with you all about these experiences over the next week.
This Friday we are hosting an open day for our Kindergarten classroom. Can you believe Kindy 2023 enrolments are already open. If you have a child who is eligible to attend Kindy in 2023 we invite you to come along to the Open Day this Friday from 8.30am to explore the Kindy classroom and get to know the wonderful staff who will support your child in their first year of Primary Schooling. Please spread the word amongst your family and friends in Kununurra.
Next week we are really looking forward to sharing our NAIDOC week celebrations with you. On Monday we will launch St Joseph’s NAIDOC week with a march from school through town to Whitegum Park and back to school again. This march will promote the importance of education for all of our students, and we would love parents, carers and community members to join us. Our students have been busy learning a song written by Miss Judith to sing as we walk through town. We will leave from school at approximately 1130am and will return in time for lunch. After lunch we are hosting our first students versus parents sports afternoon for the year with a Basketball match and game of Tug O War. I believe the parents were victorious at our match last year so we encourage you to maintain your winning streak this year! We hope you can join us from 1pm on the Basketball court for what I am sure will be a lot of fun! On Tuesday and Wednesday all students will rotate through different activities organised by our Aboriginal Teaching Assistants. These rotations will begin at 1130am each day and conclude at home time. On Thursday we will close our celebrations with a closing liturgy at 12noon followed by a picnic lunch on the front lawn. Students can bring their own lunch that day and we will enjoy lunch as a whole school. The ATA’s will make some food for us to also try. Parents, Carers and community members are very welcome to join us for the closing liturgy and shared lunch on Thursday.
As I am sure you are aware teachers have been busy preparing Semester One Reports and we hope to have these finalised in the next week. In keeping with our school’s focus on caring for the environment we have once again made the decision to not print out each individual student report, Pope John Paul II said “the earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” I am sure you can appreciate printing off student reports uses lots of paper and energy which we can avoid by preparing digital reports. Once ready reports will be emailed directly to parents/carers which we have an email address for. If you would like a printed copy of your report, please contact the front office to arrange this.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Miss Gabby
Principal

School Chaplain Update
During Term 2, we have been implementing the ‘Seasons of Growth’ program with students from years 4/5 and 5/6.
Students have participated in a wide range of activities including group discussions, art/craft, stories, journaling, and guided reflection for the benefit of learning how to deal with grief, worry and loss.
In Semester 2, we will continue classes with new students from the same grades, some building on the previous levels {some up to level 3}. All are looking forward to what the eight-week program brings.
If any parents or carers are interested in their child (in grades) enrolling or in gaining extra information, please contact Jamie Short

TRUCK INCURSION
Each year level got the chance to come out and learn about road safety. Students also got the chance to look inside, as well as beep the horn.

The 5/6 class extended their learning by writing some awesome shape poems about trucks as well.

Lets hear from our TA / ATA's
Miss Morgan - Year 3 TA
Term 2 has been a very busy one for the Yr 3 class as we began with celebrating our behavioral goals by indulging in lamingtons, since we read “Possum Magic.” We made raspberry and chocolate lamingtons and ate them with whipped cream! After our first experience of NAPLAN testing, we enjoyed the treat of making and decorating vanilla cupcakes with a variety of toppings including Oreos!
We started MacqLit lessons in week 2 with various groups. The students involved are working towards becoming independent readers, with greater confidence in spelling. In Maths we are targeting fractions and so we thought of another way to enjoy the learning experience whilst eating once again! The students became little master chefs as they not only spread out the toppings, but also rolled out pizza dough themselves. After baking the pizzas, they cut them into halves, quarters and even smaller pieces, and of course devoured them for lunch.
This term I have the joy in supporting the Parish with Children’s Liturgy, so please feel welcome to join us with the children’s faith journey
Miss Deb - Year 5/6 TA
This term we have been focusing on our Times Tables before school and during maths lessons. The students made some goals at the beginning of term 2, that they would attempt or achieve to complete and understand all of the timetables.
Also this term we are focusing on recycling. They have made signs up on the large white recycle bags to make it easy for families to bring plastic bottles, cans and glass. These funds will help to buy extra food for children in need. At recess and lunch, we have buckets for fruit scraps for our compost tumbler.
Focusing on recycling at school enables students follow good rules for making it a cleaner environment and hopefully this will follow on at home as well.
Miss Eileen - ATA
NAIDOC
We will be celebrating NAIDOC next week. This year the Theme is Get Up! Stand up! Show Up!
During the week there are activities organized for the students to participate in. If any parents would like to come in to participate please let us know.
On Thursday there will be a shared lunch, along with our closing ceremony where parents are more than welcome to attend.
