Term 2, Week 8
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week at our Monday assembly we talked about what it means to be a strong learner at St Joseph’s. Some of the responses from students included “Listening to the teacher”, “Ignoring others who are trying to distract you” and “Focusing on your learning”. All students were reminded of how they could be a strong learner in class and why it was so important to try your best each and every day at school. We also enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate students who had been caught doing the right thing at school.
This week we have welcomed Deanne Sutherland to our school. Deanne is a School Support Consultant based in the Catholic Education Office in Perth. Deanne is supporting both our school and St Joseph’s Wyndham over the next two weeks. She is spending time in classrooms supporting both students and teachers.
Our staff have been working on plans to celebrate NAIDOC week in week 10 of this term. So far we have decided we will launch NAIDOC week with an opening march through town advocating for the importance of education. We will then have a student versus parents basketball match back at school after lunch. On Tuesday and Wednesday our students will rotate through different activities organised by our Aboriginal Teaching Assistants (ATA’s). On Thursday we will come together for our closing liturgy and the whole school will have lunch together. Children are encouraged to bring their own lunch that day and we will set up picnic mats on the front lawn. Our ATA’s will prepare a few dishes for our students to also try at this time. Parents and families are very welcome to join us for lunch as well as all our NAIDOC activities during the week. We are hoping each class will have one of our Indigenous parents come in and talk to the students sharing a bit about their story and their successes. We are also hoping each class will get the opportunity to go out on country over the next couple of weeks. If you would like to be involved in our NAIDOC celebrations please speak to one of our ATA’s.
School photo day is this Friday 17th June 2022. Please make sure all students are at school on time in full school uniform. If you haven’t received your photo envelope please collect another one from the front office. Sibling photo envelopes can also be collected from the front office.
I would like to draw your attention to a change of date for the Term 3 School closure day. It was originally scheduled for the first day back of term Monday 18th July however this day has now been changed to Friday 22nd July. All students and staff will return for term 3 on Monday and there will be no school for students on the Friday in week 1. Please find included in this week’s newsletter an updated Term 3 planner.
We are still actively looking for parents and carers to support our School Advisory Council and Parents and Friends group. If you would like to know more about this then please come and see me.
Thank you to all the families who have paid off their school fees or who have organised a payment plan. If you are yet to do so please come and talk to us in the front office. If you are experiencing financial hardship and unable to pay your school fees please come and speak directly with me.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Miss Gabby

Congratulations to Tylen and Grace for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday.
We are very proud of you both.

Keeping up with Year 3
Wellbeing
This term we have implemented a new wellbeing initiative to our class- positive affirmations. Every week a new affirmation is introduced to the students. As part of our morning circle time, we have a discussion about what the affirmation means, say it aloud three times as a whole class and then may complete an activity or something related to the affirmation throughout the week. We have been relating the affirmation back to our school BOABS and sharing times when we have been resilient, unique or brave etc. Then we add the affirmation to our class affirmation tree (tree of awesomeness).
Wellbeing for Learning
For students, the absence of wellbeing and the presence of mental illness can profoundly impact educational outcomes (Lawrence et al., 2015). By creating classrooms and schools that support wellbeing, we can help young people to flourish.
When students:
· feel good,
· have their psychological and social needs met and
· are situated in environments that promote a wellbeing culture,
They will be:
· more ready to learn,
· function better as a learner, and
· benefit academically
(Borgonovi, 2016 & Brock et al. 2008).
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about fractions. We have been learning about equal parts of the whole, different ways to represent the same fractions and equivalent fractions. To consolidate our learning we made fairy bread. First, we split our class of 18 into half. Then we posed some questions if we could split the class into quarters and thirds. We found we could only split it into thirds. Then, the class was grouped into thirds to make the fairy bread. Here, some of the class split their fairy bread into halves and others in quarters. We then looked at which fractions are equivalent- ½ = 2/4. This Friday we are going to be making pizzas- we are all looking forward to doing this and applying our fractions knowledge.
