Term 2, Week 7
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope you had a wonderfully relaxing long weekend! All staff appreciated the time to come together last week for Professional learning. It was a great opportunity to work with our colleagues from St Joseph’s Wyndham and to look at the literacy practices we utilise across the school. This week we have welcomed Diana Jansz who is the Religious Education Consultant for Catholic Education Western Australia in Broome. She has worked with our leadership staff on the school’s Evangelisation Plan, Religious Education Curriculum and delivered professional learning to all staff.
On Friday we look forward to a visit from Bishop Michael Morrissey who is here to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 12th June for Grace and Tylen. All students and staff are invited to join us for 8:30am Mass on Sunday.
Last Sunday was Pentecost, the birthday of the Catholic Church. On Wednesday we joined as a whole school community for our first whole school mass of the year. This was a lovely opportunity to gather with each other and Fr Joel and celebrate such an important celebration for our Church.
Hopefully you have marked School Photo Day in your calendars for next Friday 17th June. Our photos will begin at 8am sharp so we ask students to make sure they are on time to school that day. Every student should have been given their photo envelope which has a list of packages and payment options available. All photos must be paid for on the day and cannot be taken out of canteen accounts. Sibling photos are also available and if you are interested in these please collect a sibling photo envelope from the front office.
Just a reminder that each family is welcome to come and collect free Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) from the front office. Whilst COVID numbers in Kununurra have significantly decreased we have continued to have further positive cases identified in the school community over the last two weeks.
As you are probably aware Health authorities have predicted that we are in for a significant flu season. To support vaccination during the month of June all West Australians are eligible for a free flu vaccination. I encourage you to explore options around town for a flu vaccination for you and your family.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Miss Gabby
Principal

In History this term the Year Two’s have been looking at significant people and places within our community. The students learnt many interesting facts about Agnes Armstrong and why she is so important to our community, which they then displayed on a character profile. We learnt that:
- Agnes was born in 1954
- She speaks Miriwoong
- She grew up on Ivanhoe station
- She shares her memories of growing up on stations, bush life and stories from her grandparents
- Her paintings are about stories of her childhood
- She was born beside a billabong
- She cooks for pensioners in our Mirima Community
- She has one daughter and three adopted sons
This week we have learnt lots of interesting facts about how our school is a significant man-made place within our community and we loved looking at old pictures of when the Sisters of St Joseph worked here. The Year Two’s have also been acknowledging National Sorry Day which was celebrated last week, how we are all different and we learn from past mistakes.

In Pre-primary we have been busy learning lots of new things. One thing we are very proud of is our Visual Arts, which builds on the dispositions developed in the early years. Pre-Primary students have been creating original artwork using different techniques such as using shaving foam and coloured dyes to create marbled patterned butterflies. Students have also been investigating different techniques by creating a paper craft applying different layers of paper to make a bird. Pre-Primary is a time students begin to see themselves as artists as they display and share their artwork with others. We have been displaying our artwork in the classroom and are hoping to enter our creations in the 50th Anniversary of the Kununurra Agricultural show. As students make and respond to artwork, they explore different places art is displayed in the local community. Visual arts are a great time to develop oral language skills and build relationships with other students and each other.
Please feel free to come see some of our beautiful artwork on display.

We love our weekly visits from Miriwoong Language Centre. The students get the opportunity to learn new words and themes each term. The language lessons are engaging for everyone, having the opportunity to play games and sing songs in Miriwoong. A very enriching part of our curriculums.
