Term 2, Week 3

May 11, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Week 3. This week our year 3 and 5 students sat their NAPLAN examinations. We have been very impressed with how they have participated in this process and should be congratulated on their efforts so far. Students who have been absent this week are able to catch up on their missed NAPLAN tests next week also.

We have informed the parents/carers of our OSHC service that we will be placing the service into voluntary suspension and the last day of operation is the 25th May 2022. This is not an easy decision to have made however we have explored all potential staffing options and have been unable to successfully fulfil the position of Nominated Supervisor. We are working with a local service provider and are hopeful that the service may be transferred to them as early as June. As soon as things have been confirmed the school and OSHC community will be informed.

This week the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) volunteers have returned to Kununurra and have been working with both our school and EKC. The YWAM volunteers have run a leadership workshop for our student leaders in Year 4 to 6 to develop their leadership skills. We look forward to continuing this work when YWAM return later in the year.

Last week the team from Bluearth were back in town running workshops with a number of services. We were lucky enough to have them run workshops with staff and students from school. All of our students from AFAFE through to year 6 had the opportunity to get involved with the team and play some of their games. We look forward to seeing more of these games happening in and around the school.

We hope you have the following dates marked in your diary:

Friday 27th May 2022 Cross Country Carnival for all St Joseph’s Students.

Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd June School closure days for Term 2 (no school).

Monday 6th June WA Day Public Holiday (no school).

Sunday 12th June Sacrament of Confirmation.

The Catholic Church marks the Marian month of May and Pope Francis is urging Catholics to pray for young people and their response to God’s call to holiness. Pope Francis highlighted Mary’s courageous and determined “yes” to the Lord, and called on young Catholics to imitate her readiness to improve the world. He said young people must learn to take risks, in order to “build something new, a better world.” “Don’t forget that in order to follow Mary you need to discern and discover what Jesus wants from you, not what you might think you can do,” said the Pope. You may like to discuss with your children how they can focus on being courageous like Mary during the month of May, you may also like to use the following prayer within your own family.

Enjoy the rest of the week!

Things have been very busy this term with all things Physical Education.

We had Bluearth representatives from Melbourne and Alice Springs run sessions last week for AFAFE-Year6s.

We also were lucky enough to have Jeremy from NRL Touch Football WA running clinics last Tuesday across all year levels as well.

Students have been busy training for our School Cross Country next Friday and continuing their NRL touch football practice. Students have been engaging with the new football code and the very different rules that touch is played by compared to AFL. It has been great to see students build confidence with the ball and learn to use their abilities in different ways as part of a team. There have been some great demonstrations of resilience and perseverance, and this is a credit to our students for their hard work and determination to succeed during PE challenges.

Technology and Science this term is based around physical sciences, deconstructing, decoding, designing, and discovering how and why things are made with the components and materials they are to work effectively for an intended purpose. Students have been using peer and group work activities to support each other's learning. They have also been working hard at verbalising ideas to partners and the class when they are discussing their research, conclusions and designs.

Music this term is based around global music, and this has included learning body percussion and movement-based routines. Students have excelled at learning and remembering these new routines and have enjoyed the partnered exercises. Across the school, it seems the favourite so far is the South African body percussion and song "Sawabona" (which  means "I see you" but is used in greeting to mean I respect and acknowledge you, your dignity and your worth) in Zulu. The return phrase is "Sikbona" which means "I am here" but infers "When you see me, you bring me into existence". Students will continue to learn about and discuss the worth and importance of global and local culture and tradition and the musical perspectives associated with these themes.

MacqLit update

Dear Parents/Guardians

We are so pleased to be able to begin MacqLit for Term 2, 2022.  We have had a great start to MacqLit this Term, with most students picking up where they left off from last year.  Even with such a big break there is lots of data demonstrating that information is really sticking with our groups.  We are so proud of our students, who have worked hard on improving their reading skills. Last year it was really fantastic to hear the success stories from staff and parents who saw great improvements in class and at home.  Moving forward into this term our goal is to keep up this impressive growth rate for all students and have everyone reading with fluency and comprehension every day.

MacqLit is a reading and spelling intervention program designed to assist students, who attend school regularly, yet still struggle with attaining literacy skills.  If you think your child would benefit from MacqLit please contact the school and ask to speak to Shaun Joseph.
