Term 2, Week 2

May 5, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents/Carers,

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents and staff that turned up to our Busy Bee on Saturday. The enthusiasm and perseverance of everyone was amazing and we were able to completely transform the garden at the back of the year one classroom as well as add some new trees around the school. If you haven’t checked out the transformation it is worth taking a walk over and having a look. We look forward to having our students working in and enjoying the garden.

As I am sure you are all aware the Premier announced new baseline COVID guidelines effective 29th April 2022. We have been doing our best to respond to these new protocols and work out what they mean in our context. As I am sure you are aware COVID is still prevalent within Kununurra and within our school community. We believe it is important to do all we can to keep our students, staff and community safe especially given the number of vulnerable people within our school and wider community. The biggest change for our school is that masks are no longer mandatory in school settings, however strongly encouraged where physical distancing is not possible. Parents are allowed into the school, face to face meetings are also able to resume, students do not have to stay within their year level cohorts and schools are no longer require to do contact tracing or identify close contacts. If your child tests positive please continue to inform the school of these results. Please review the information posters included in this newsletter.

We are still seeking a Nominated Supervisor to run our OSHC. The job has been posted on the CEWA website, SEEK and local job notice boards. Please continue to spread the word amongst your own networks and if you have anyone that is interested, please encourage them to make contact with me. I am doing everything I can to recruit a suitable applicant, however if we are unable to fill this position we may have no choice but to temporarily or permanently close the service.

Hopefully you are aware that the Canteen is back in operation. Hellen has been adding to the canteen menu each week and is being informed by student feedback as to how the menu grows and expands. Parents/Carers are welcome to utilize the canteen for recess and lunch. The menu will change day to day and week to week. Please consult the white board outside the canteen for daily specials.

We are still actively recruiting for our School Advisory Council and Parents & Friends group. It would be great to have more parents/carers sharing their gifts and talents with the school community. If you would like to know more, please feel free to speak to myself, School Advisory Chairperson Rowena Alexander or long time P&F member Emma Walker.

At mass this week we will be celebrating all the special women in our lives. We will also be presenting Violet Smith and Christopher Walker to the Parish ahead of them receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Sunday 15th May. You are welcome to join us in celebrating the Sacrament at our Sunday Mass which will begin at 8:15am.

I am pleased to announce our Cross Country carnival is going ahead this term and has been scheduled for Friday 27th May. The carnival will begin at 8:15am and all parents/carers are welcome to come along and support their children. We will be unable to provide a detailed timetable for the day as there are many variables we cannot account for. We ask that you get there earlier than the scheduled time to avoid any disappointment.

This Friday we will be having the Year 2 class present their assembly item in the library. Only Year 2 parents/carers are invited to attend as this will allow us to safely physically distance within the library space. All other parents/carers are invited to join us via TEAMS with the link being sent out on Seesaw.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Miss Gabby

Principal

A big THANK YOU to all our helpers at our Busy Bee on Saturday. Our new gardens look amazing, we cant wait to use them as part of our learning :)

NAPLAN TESTING

Dear Parents/Guardians,

NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy.

This term St Joseph students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be participating in the National Naplan test, which will be held across Australia on May 10th, 11th and 12th. Our teachers have been working hard to make sure all students are prepared for Naplan for 2022. We look forward to our students participating in this year's testing.  .

Please keep these dates in mind for your child's attendance at St Joseph's as we move towards Naplan in Week 3 of the school calendar.   As always if you have any questions about Naplan or would like to discuss your child's involvement in the test, please contact the school and ask to speak to Shaun Joseph or please have a look at the link below to find further information.
