Late to Class

A reminder how important it is for children to arrive at school on time (7:50am). If a child is an hour late each day, this would equate to them being absent from school for a total of 40 school days over the course of the year. Classroom rolls are marked electronically before 8:30am each day.

St Patrick’s Day Quiz Night

Thank you to those who attended the Quiz Night meeting on Monday. Keep an eye on the newsletter, Facebook page and office noticeboard for information regarding dates and times for future meetings. Please note the date and venue for our Quiz Night: Kununurra Leisure Centre, Saturday 14th March. Thank you to Sally Dignam for the work she has already done and to the parents, carers and friends who have volunteered to assist with the planning and organisation of this event. Tickets will be available from the office beginning this Thursday 20th February.

Parent Information Sessions

It was wonderful to see many of our classrooms filled with parents and carers attending our information sessions last week. If you were unable to attend, please make a time to see your child’s teacher re. the respective education programs being delivered in classrooms this year.

Swimming

All is in readiness for our swimming program commencing on Monday, 16th March. Please ensure that:

¨ Your child’s swimming permission note has been signed and returned to school (to be sent home by the end of this week).

¨ Your child comes to school with their bathers and a towel.

Thank you to Miss Gehrmann, Mr Jamie, Miss Ashleigh and Mrs Christopher for volunteering their services and ensuring our swimming program goes ahead this year.

Thankyou

A big thank you to the parents and carers who have spent time re-organising our library and assisting in tidying our garden beds. Your help is always most

appreciated.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Emily and Will Thomas on the safe arrival of ‘Adelaide Gracey,’ a new sister for Jack. Everyone is doing well and we look forward to meeting

Adelaide soon.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Reminders

Picking up and dropping off students

School Bus Pick-ups and Drop-offs

For the safety of our children, we would like to remind parents that children catching our white Coaster school bus will be dropped off in the afternoon ONLY at the address from which they are picked up in the morning.

Attempts to accommodate parents who ring during the school day asking that their children be dropped off elsewhere have resulted in a number of confusing situations, whereby children have ended up going home to an empty house or to a house where they are not expected. Children who do not live in Ranch/Garden/Reserve/old town/Hidden Valley may not catch our bus home to a different address. Your child cannot be dropped off at a different address unless it is an emergency situation (eg you have an emergency visit to the hospital and an arrangement has been made for your child to be cared by another family member or friend).

Many thanks for your cooperation.

Dr Patricia Elder

Kununurra School Dental Clinic

As the school calendar for the new year begins I would formally like to introduce myself as the new Dentist in town; Dr Patricia Elder.

I am currently working in Kununurra for the Government Dental Health Services which also incorporates and oversees the School Dental Service. We are a combined service, school and adult clinic which is located on the hospital grounds. Our dental Therapist is Elena Roche and her assistant Jenny Nguyen. Parents are to contact the school service for their children’s examinations.

Their contact details are M: 0419 939 179 and email: kununurramobile@dental.health.wa.gov.au. Our opening times are 7:30am to 3:30pm and we are closed on the school holidays and public holidays.

Payment

To simplify the ordering process and minimise the amount of cash being handled at school, we ask that all Book Club orders are paid for by credit card. Thank you

Religious Education News
Welcome back students and parents to an exciting 2020. The first few weeks have very quickly disappeared and St Joseph’s will again take on the challenge of raising funds to support Caritas during Lent. Each class has a Caritas Project Compassion box in their classroom for donating to those less fortunate in our world. The class that raises the most will receive a reward. We will also have another couple of fund raising activities to finish off the year.
In 2020 the following students will be involved in our Sacramental program.

Shakira Ward, Tylen, Johnson, Judd Simon (Reconciliation)
Charlotte Hogan, Nelly Melpi, Shakira Ward (First Eucharist)
Huon Diddams, Mia Davies (Confirmation)

Please keep them in our prayers throughout the year.
I have included some important liturgical dates for the first term. I would encourage parents, grandparents and carers to attend and join in the celebrations.

Meet Mr Zahra
My name is Thomas Zahra and I have been a part of the St Joseph’s team since the beginning of 2019. I have been a teacher for the past 4 years, but for the last 12 months I have taken a step back from full time to part time work to take care of my now two-and-a-half-year-old, Chase. My wife and I met when we were in high school in Perth and we both studied teaching at the same time at Curtin University. After graduating, we both moved to the Great Southern Region of Western Australia to teach at the same school. At the start of 2019 an opportunity arose for my partner to advance her teaching career in Kununurra, so we moved our family and we now love it here. We love spending our weekends and school holidays adventuring and swimming.

My role at St Joseph’s Kununurra this year is predominantly Health and Physical Education (Sport) for the Year 3 and 5/6 classes. This role will also include me organising the cross country and the sports carnival, in which I am very excited about. I also take the Year 5 and 6 class for Digital Technology where we learn and practise our computational thinking skills. In addition to these classes, I will also be taking the Year 3 and 5/6 class for Library Studies, which includes various reading activities.

I believe 2020 will be a very positive year for our school and I am very grateful and excited to be apart of it.
