Principal's Piece

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank for your continued support as we face increasing numbers of COVID cases in Kununurra. We appreciate all those parents/carers who are keeping symptomatic children at home, who are informing the school and letting us know their child’s COVID test results. If your child is not at school because they are a close contact or because they have tested positive please inform the front office either by phone or email. If your child is a close contact or a positive case and you would like some learning materials for them please contact the school and request a home learning pack. If your child is not a close household contact or positive case then we encourage them to come to school. School is safe and open and we are continuing to follow all directives from WA Health.

Easter raffle tickets went home to the eldest child in each family this week. We have already had entire books sold and returned to school. If you would like additional raffle tickets please contact the office. We look forward to announcing the winners of our raffle next Friday.

Next week we will be focusing on the story and events of Easter. Each morning we will have an Easter liturgy presented by a different class telling a separate part of the Easter story. On Friday, 8th April, children are encouraged to wear black/dark clothing as a symbol of sadness at Jesus dying. On Tuesday, 26th April, (first day of Term 2) students are encouraged to wear bright clothing (no donation necessary) to represent our joy and celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.

This term we have been focusing on our School BOABS of "Being Respectful" and "Following Directions". The students have been demonstrated great examples of this behaviour at our school in different environments. We have been counting our BOAB cards each week and keeping a tally as to which Faction has the most BOABS. So far ORD is in the lead and on their way to collecting the first prize of the year.

This term our student leaders have been learning an Acknowledgement of Country that we have been using to lead our school assemblies. Lacey, Charmaine and Grace practised the Acknowledgement of Country during their own lunchtime and came up with the actions, which they then taught students in the Year 4/5 class. They have begun teaching the rest of our students at our assemblies. We hope all students at St Joseph’s will learn our school acknowledgement and are confident using this in their classrooms and at whole school events.

Prayer for Ukraine

Loving God,

We pray for the people of Ukraine,

For all those suffering or afraid,

That you will be close to them and protect them.

We pray for world leaders,

For compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.

We pray for the world

That in this moment of crises,

We may reach out in solidarity

To our brothers and sisters in need.

May we walk in your ways

So that peace and justice

Become a reality for the people of Ukraine

And for all the world.

Amen

Saint Joseph’s Day and Project Compassion

Easter Celebrations

Our children are learning about the meaning of Easter in their Religious Education program. Each morning in the last week of school, we will have special Easter Assembly via Teams and then continue the story in the first week of Term 2.

To reinforce the meaning of Easter, on the last day of term, Friday 8th  April, children are invited to wear black/dark clothes as a symbol of sadness and Jesus dying. On the first day of Term 2, Tuesday 26th April, children are invited to wear bright crazy clothes as a symbol of the joy of the resurrection (there is no gold coin expected). On these days, the clothes and atmosphere will be a teaching point of the Easter story.

Year 3 News

Punctuation just got a whole lot more interesting!

This term the Year 3 class have introduced Kung Fu Punctuation into our Reading, Writing and Spelling lessons. Kung Fu Punctuation, where all punctuation marks are given corresponding kung-fu-style actions with accompanying sounds, is proving to be highly effective in teaching the intricacies of commas, exclamation marks, speech marks, apostrophes and full stops. Kung Fu Punctuation allows the children to actually feel what it’s like to use punctuation.

Recommended by and based on the beliefs of Ros Wilson (Big Writing founder), Kung Fu Punctuation works by assigning a Kung Fu based sound and action for each punctuation symbol making it more enjoyable to learn and more memorable in the process.

Over the term the Year 3 students have learnt that punctuation helps you to understand how characters are feeling and acting. It also helps a child to become a fluent reader that uses expression.

“I enjoy doing punctuation kung fu at the end of the sentence and the start” ~ Nancia-Jo Duncan

“1. Because it is FUN 2. it shows our learning about punctuation, and it can be very handy in your reading 3. It has been fun to work as a team doing our assembly” ~ Archie Stanley

Last week we made a video for our assembly item of our class completing Kung Fu Punctuation. In the video we modelled the kung fu moves for exclamation marks, full stops, commas, capital letter, speech marks and apostrophes. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did making it!
