2022 Term 1, Week 8
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents and Carers
We started our week with a wonderful Feast Day celebrating St Joseph. Our students gathered online for a liturgy where we learnt about Joseph's life and what type of man he was. After lunch the students completed different St Joseph-themed activities. They enjoyed lining up their cans for recycling on the basketball court and Pre-Primary had the longest line, winning themselves a movie and popcorn afternoon. Thank you to those children who brought in cans, gold coin donations for wearing free dress and money for icy poles.
To continue our fundraising for Project Compassion the staff have donated Easter Eggs for a Easter hamper raffle. Tickets will go home next week to each family. We ask that you sell the tickets to your friends and family and return them by Thursday 7th April (Week 10) so we can announce the winners at our Easter service on the final Friday of school. Tickets will be $2 each or $20 for a book. If you would like more tickets please contact the front office. Thanks in advance for your support.
This week we welcomed Hellen Johnson to the role of Canteen Manager. Hellen comes to us with many years of experience in the hospitality industry. It is really exciting to finally have someone working in the Canteen after many months of searching. The Canteen will continue to only provide emergency lunches this week. During Week 9 and 10 a limited Canteen menu will be available for all students (see below). We look forward to launching our new full Canteen menu at the start of Term 2, which will have a focus on providing healthy and nutritious food. Thanks for your patience and support during the period of our canteen closure.
Miss Desma will finish with us at the end of this term to pursue her art. We have really enjoyed having Desma back at school and wish her all the best with her new endeavour. Miss Ros has extended her leave and will not be returning to school in 2022. She is pursuing new job opportunities at the Red Sun clothing store and we wish Ros all the best. I have advertised for a Teaching Assistant from the start of Term 2 and concluding at the end of the year. We have already had several applicants, so I am hopeful we will get another amazing person to join our team. A couple of weeks ago we welcomed back Miss Susan after a year of leave. It has been great to have Susan at school and we look forward to working with her this year. Miss Di will be going on long service leave for Terms 2 and 3 and we wish her a pleasant break. We have been lucky to have filled her position for this time and welcome Kristen Bunce to the roll of full time Administration Officer. Miss Ann will continue in her Administration Officer roll for two days a week.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Lenten Prayers of Intercession from CARITAS
We pray for all who know what it is to live in the ashes: the poor, the marginalised, the outcast, the lonely, the sick. May the ashes we wear in humility be for us all a sign of our hope in the rising of the Lord of all life. Lord hear us.
We pray for all those whose access to food and water is insecure. May the whole human family respond generously in creating lasting justice in the distribution of life’s necessities. May we respond to opportunities, such as those presented by Project Compassion this Lent, to build a future for all generations. Lord hear us.
We pray for all those who live with disability, especially those who are stigmatised in any way. May we do all we can to support their flourishing as truly equal participants in the human family. Lord hear us.
We pray for the work of Caritas Australia through Project Compassion. We pray also for greater respect for the environment. May we care deeply for the Earth that God has entrusted to our care. May we realise that we are on Holy Ground. Lord hear us.
We pray for those driven away from their homes by violence, persecution or poverty. May our hearts be open to do all we can to rebuild the lives of others. May we be instruments of God’s peace. Lord hear us.
We pray that all women may be respected and encouraged to take their rightful place in society. We pray also that all people will have access to clean water and safe house. May we act for justice in concrete ways, such as through Project Compassion. Lord hear us.
We pray for a renewal of our faith in Holy Week. Through works such as Project Compassion, may we walk alongside our brothers and sisters towards the new life of Easter. Lord hear us.

Saint Joseph’s Day and Project Compassion

Easter Celebrations
Our children are learning about the meaning of Easter in their Religious Education program. Each morning in the last week of school, we will have special Easter Assembly via Teams and then continue the story in the first week of Term 2.
To reinforce the meaning of Easter, on the last day of term, Friday 8th April, children are invited to wear black/dark clothes as a symbol of sadness and Jesus dying. On the first day of Term 2, Tuesday 26th April, children are invited to wear bright crazy clothes as a symbol of the joy of the resurrection (there is no gold coin expected). On these days, the clothes and atmosphere will be a teaching point of the Easter story.

The Year of St Joseph Artwork 2021
To celebrate the year of St Joseph in 2021, the Broome Catholic Education Office commissioned the work of art below. Schools were then invited to send in five photos of children. These were used to transform the painting into a photo mosaic. The end result is on display in the front office.
~~~~~~
The tree at the top left represents the desert land of the Kutjunka region. The yellow and brown spots underneath represent the dried desert lands.
The boab tree in the bottom right represents the lands of the Kimberley where the Boabs grow. The red spots symbolise the red sand and hot ground of the Kimberley regions that are close to the ocean.
In the middle of the painting there are upside down U shapes. These symbolise the people of the Kimberley who come together to celebrate Saint Joseph and his influence in these lands. Joseph is in the middle with a halo.
