2022 Term 1, Week 7

March 17, 2022

Principal's Piece

Dear Parents and Carers

This week at St Joseph’s we have focused on the school BOAB rule of "Following Directions". We have discussed following directions in different areas of the school such as the playground, classrooms, at assembly etc. When we see students following the expected behaviour they are rewarded with a BOAB card. This year we have been counting the BOABS received by each faction and the first faction to reach 100 BOAB cards will get a reward. Some of the rewards suggested by our student leaders were an excursion to the pool, more time for sport, time on the iPads and a party. The winning faction will get to vote for their reward.

We tried to hold our annual meeting for the School Advisory Council and P&F this week but unfortunately were unable to get a quorum of parents. As mentioned last week, both the SAC and the P&F make an important contribution to the school community. However they cannot function without parent members and volunteers. The SAC and P&F won’t meet more than once a term and these meetings generally take no longer than an hour. If you are interested in being involved and would like to know more please give me a call or an email. I'm happy to chat further with you about either.

This Saturday, 19th of March, is St Joseph’s Feast Day. This is an important celebration for our school as it gives us an opportunity to reflect on Joseph, the life he led and the contribution he made to the lives of Mary and Jesus. He is a good role model for all of us. We will celebrate St Joseph’s Feast Day on Monday the 21st of March. We will have a liturgy before lunch and each class will complete Feast Day activities in the afternoon. Students are invited to wear casual clothes for a gold coin donation, the Year 5/6 class will be selling icy poles for 50c and we ask that students to bring along their cans for recycling. The money raised will go towards Project Compassion. Thanks in advance for you support of our Feast Day.

Our school continues to follow all COVID guidelines and protocols set out by the WA government and WA Health Department as we have transitioned to the Very High Caseload Level 2 settings. Our school is open and safe for learning and students who are well are encouraged to attend. If your child is unwell please ring and inform the school that they will not be attending.  You are encouraged to take your child for COVID testing when they have any COVID symptoms. Students should not return to school until they are symptom-free. Thank you to all parents/carers who are wearing masks when on school grounds. Just a reminder that whilst we cannot meet face to face with parents you are more than welcome to reach out to your child’s teacher via phone or email.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

On Monday we celebrated the election of our student leaders with a Leaders Lunch

O Saint Joseph, you are a man greatly favoured by the Most High.

The angel of the Lord appeared to you in dreams, while you slept, to warn you and guide you as you cared for the Holy Family.

You were both silent and strong, a loyal and courageous protector.

As you rest in the Lord, confident of His absolute power and goodness, look upon us.

Take our needs into your heart, dream of it, and present it to your Son.

Help us, good Saint Joseph, to hear the voice of God, to arise and act with love.

We praise and thank God with joy.

Amen

Saint Joseph’s Day and Project Compassion

The Feast of Saint Joseph, the patron of our school, is on March 19th. As this date is on the weekend, we will celebrate on Monday 21st March. There will be a liturgy before lunch, followed by class  activities in the afternoon.

During Lent, we focus on helping others in need through Caritas Australia and Project Compassion. Every class has donation boxes for this cause. As a fundraiser, on Saint Joseph’s day (21st March), children are invited to:

  • Wear casual clothes for a gold coin donation
  • Bring 50c for an ice block
  • Bring along cans to recycle.

Each class will line up their cans on the basketball court. The class with the longest line will have a special treat – movie afternoon with popcorn, and Project Compassion will get the cash for cans! It’s a WIN-WIN!!

The Year of St Joseph Artwork 2021

To celebrate the year of St Joseph in 2021, the Broome Catholic Education Office commissioned the work of art below. Schools were then invited to send in five photos of children. These were used to transform the painting into a photo mosaic. The end result is on display in the front office.

   ~~~~~~
The tree at the top left represents the desert land of the Kutjunka region. The yellow and brown spots underneath represent the dried desert lands.
The boab tree in the bottom right represents the lands of the Kimberley where the Boabs grow. The red spots symbolise the red sand and hot ground of the Kimberley regions that are close to the ocean.
In the middle of the painting there are upside down U shapes. These symbolise the people of the Kimberley who come together to celebrate Saint Joseph and his influence in these lands. Joseph is in the middle with a halo.
Year 5/6
On Monday Year 5/6 had a visit from some Police Officers. We learnt about safety and focused on bikes, road usage, and social media. We were informed that we need to ask permission if we want to take or use a photo of anyone. We look forward to more police visits to continue learning about being safe in our community and school.
St patrick's Quiz Night Update
and
Thank you to Our Past Sponsors
To Our Generous Quiz Night Sponsors
St Joseph’s school would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of St Patrick’s Day Quiz Night over the years. Due to the transition to High COVID Case Load Protocols we didn’t feel it was safe to continue with our plans for the Quiz night this year. Additionally we appreciate the ongoing stress of COVID on businesses and our community and don't wish to add to this by requesting donations this year.
Your support has meant we have been able to create an ongoing event that is so important to the running of our school within a community that we are passionate about supporting. Your positive contribution has allowed the school to run programs such as Mini Vinnies, Breakfast Club, purchase iPads and equipment that increases opportunities for learning and play both in the classroom and in our outdoor spaces.
Thank you for your generosity. Year after year we are humbled by your support. We hope that we can run the Quiz night again in 2023. In the meantime we wish you a prosperous and happy year.
Yours sincerely and gratefully
