2021 Term 3, Week 5
Principal's Piece
Dear Friends and Families
It was wonderful to have so many of you join us for the Athletics Carnival last week. It was a great day, enjoyed by all. We were so impressed with the students’ sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the day. Congratulations to all the students who tried their best. Thank you to Matilda for organising the carnival and for all staff and parent volunteers who made the day run so smoothly.
The Berry Street Training last week was a great opportunity for staff to delve deeper into a whole school approach to Trauma Informed Practice. It prompted extensive discussion around our next steps towards embedding positive education throughout the school. Specifically in the area of Character, we looked at a strengths-based approach. The training highlighted the critical importance of our relationships, perception of self, and the mental and emotional states of complete engagement.
We look forward to Book Week next week, with this year's theme being Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. On Monday and Thursday students will participate in rotations celebrating books, on Wednesday at 5pm we have Stories under the Stars (see advertisement) and on Friday students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character for our Book Week Parade. In addition we have the Scholastic Book Fair in the Library.
Thank you to all families who have paid their school fees for 2021. A reminder notice was sent out to families with outstanding fees this week. If you are unable to pay your school fees, please make a time to come and discuss this with me.
A reminder that our Climate Survey is now open for parent/carer feedback. Please go to www.NSIPartnerships.com.au and enter the code SJKPACS. This is a good opportunity to have your say about St Joseph's, what is working well and what you would like to see happening. The data from this survey is used to inform whole school planning and identify areas for school improvement. There are paper copies of the survey available at the front office if you are unable to complete the survey online. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Last Sunday was the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a holy day of obligation for the Catholic Church. With The Assumption, the promises of the Lord were fulfilled for Mary, and as always, beyond all expectation. Her glorification in body and soul resulted from divine graciousness and gracefulness. Her divine motherhood is in perfect harmony with her Assumption. By looking at Mary's Assumption into Heaven we understand better that even though our daily life may be marked by trials and difficulties, it flows like a river to the divine ocean, to the fullness of joy and peace.
Have a great week.

Athletics Carnival
The Athletics Carnival highlighted the effort and sportsmanship of our students and showed how well they can work together to achieve great things. A huge shout out to the parent helpers before the event and on the day. Things would not have run as smoothly as they did without your efforts.
Students participated across a range of track and field events in a positive and enthusiastic manner. They put significant effort into their PE lessons, focussing on form, endurance and commitment to finish. On the day we were thrilled to see every student attempt and complete every activity.
As with most sporting events, things do not always go as planned but students showed great resilience in their ability to overcome disappointment and show encouragement to others.
It was a solid win in the end with our red warriors Pentecost, who took out champion faction for 2021 by almost 100 points. This does not take away from the efforts and achievement of Ivanhoe, Ord and Argyle.
The school tug-o-war event (juniors and seniors) was a fun way to end the competition.
Congratulations to Jonas and Quade on a tie for Overall Champion Boy and to Nelly for Overall Champion Girl. Congratulations goes also to Lincoln for his Sportsmanship award and his dedication to support his peers and complete all events across the day with a huge grin on his face. Well done!

Book Week
Next week is Book Week, a time to celebrate reading throughout the school with fun activities like our Book Week parade, the Book Fair and lots of other exciting activities related to reading and a love of books. The Book Fair is in the Library and families can purchase books from 2.00-2.30pm daily. Students can also buy books during their class visit to the Library. If you would like to send some money with your children, the classroom teacher will be available to collect it and supervise the purchase of books during class sessions.
The Spirit of the Arts Festival, a communal celebration of The Arts across Catholics schools in WA, is happening in September. We have the opportunity to participate through recording a video clip, of our unique location and our students singing the song Faith in the Future, to be shown at the festival in Perth. This video acts as inspiration for the concept:
https://vimeo.com/554647912. With the lyrics (see right), please encourage students to enjoy practising the song at home. It will be a great achievement for the students to feel good about!
Thank you for your support in this project.

You’re Welcome!
Our school gates are often closed for reasons of student safely, but that doesn’t mean you’re not welcome. Just lift the latch at the top of the pedestrian gate and come on in.
From the start of Term 3 the double gates off Coolibah Drive will be padlocked. Please come in through the pedestrian gate on Ironwood Drive.
COVID Update - Unwell Children
Students who are unwell should stay home. Parents are asked to seek medical advice if their child exhibits symptoms of COVID-19. Normal processes for advising the school of a child’s absence will apply.

Social Justice Sunday
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on the 29th of August. The Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, invites us to join in responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to take a seven-year journey towards total ecological sustainability guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals. The Statement provides theological foundations to ground and inspire our efforts to care for creation while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded.
