Dear Friends and Families
Week 4 is a short but busy week. Today we celebrated Mary Mackillop's Feast Day with Mass and a Puppet Show by Sr Julianne. Wednesday is our Athletics Carnival and Thursday and Friday are pupil free days as the staff are participating in their second lot of Berry Street Training. This training is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about trauma informed practice, specifically in the areas of Stamina and Engagement and Character. This week we have also had Lizzy Price, Students With Disability Consultant and Diana Jansz, Religious Education Consultant at school working with teachers.
A reminder that if students are late to school or leave early they need to be signed in/out at the front office. This is applicable to all students from Kindy to Year 6.
We had a very productive P&F Meeting last week and have set the date for our Busy Bee this term, Saturday 21st August 7 to 11am. We hope to construct a tyre mound in the main playground for the children in Year 1 to 6 to enjoy. If you are available to help us we would love to see you at the Busy Bee. We will also be looking to source some dirt to fill the tyre mound, so if you have any connections please let us know. The P&F will be hosting a sausage sizzle on our Stories under the Stars night on Wednesday 25th August so parents don't have to worry about dinner! This will be a fundraiser for the school so if you are available to help with the BBQ please let us know.
Welcome back our Year 5/6 students who went on camp last week. They had a wonderful time and had many great experiences. For several students it was the first time they had been to Broome! Thank you to Mr B, Mr Jamie and Miss B for taking such good care of the students whilst they were away. The students will be putting together an iMovie about their time in Broome, which we look forward to watching.
This week the students in Year 5 completed their Bishop's Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA). We like to think of this as the NAPLAN for Religion. Year 3 students completed the BRLA last week. This assessment will provide the school with a snapshot of how the students are doing in the learning area of Religion. As a school we can then analyse this data and identify any trends or patterns that can inform our teaching.
We look forward to seeing you at the Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. Please come dressed in your faction colours!

Have a great week.

MacqLit
This term we have had a great start to MacqLit with nearly all students progressing to the next level in the program. We are proud of our students, who have worked hard on improving their reading skills, with some students nearly doubling their MacqLit assessment score in only six months. It's been fantastic to hear further success stories from staff and parents who have noticed improvements in class and at home. Moving forward into this term our goal is to keep up this impressive growth rate and have everyone reading with fluency and comprehension every day.
Please see an excerpt below from the MacqLit website:
Report by Dr Nicola Bell and Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall 2019
Since the release of MacqLit in 2016, we have loved hearing from teachers who have implemented the program and found it successful. However, as a company founded on delivering evidence-based programs, MultiLit has also been very keen to back up this positive anecdotal feedback with hard data. With that in mind, we’ve recently taken a close look at the data we’ve collected while running MacqLit programs. The analysis included 292 students, from Years 3 through 6, who attended MacqLit at school for two terms. Trained MultiLit tutors delivered the program for roughly four hours per week during the semester, and trained MultiLit testers collected the assessment results at the beginning and end of the program. According to the raw score results, the students made substantial and statistically significant gains across the semester in word reading accuracy, nonword reading accuracy, spelling accuracy, passage reading fluency, passage reading accuracy, and reading comprehension.
As always if you would like to know more about the program and how it works or would like more information on how your child might be involved you can go to the link below or contact me.

The Spirit of the Arts Festival, a communal celebration of The Arts across Catholics schools in WA, is happening in September. We have the opportunity to participate through recording a video clip, of our unique location and our students singing the song Faith in the Future, to be shown at the festival in Perth. This video acts as inspiration for the concept:
https://vimeo.com/554647912. With the lyrics (see right), please encourage students to enjoy practising the song at home. It will be a great achievement for the students to feel good about!
Thank you for your support in this project.

Specialist Teachers
You’re Welcome!
Our school gates are often closed for reasons of student safely, but that doesn’t mean you’re not welcome. Just lift the latch at the top of the pedestrian gate and come on in.
From the start of Term 3 the double gates off Coolibah Drive will be padlocked. Please come in through the pedestrian gate on Ironwood Drive.
COVID Update - Unwell Children
Students who are unwell should stay home. Parents are asked to seek medical advice if their child exhibits symptoms of COVID-19. Normal processes for advising the school of a child’s absence will apply.

Social Justice Sunday
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on the 29th of August. The Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, invites us to join in responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to take a seven-year journey towards total ecological sustainability guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals. The Statement provides theological foundations to ground and inspire our efforts to care for creation while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded.
