Dear Friends and Families

This week the Year 5/6 students have travelled to Broome for their camp. Monday morning saw the campers depart nice and early for Broome. Whilst on camp the students will get to enjoy a range of educational and recreational activities. Some of the highlights of the week will be visiting the Historical Museum, going to the movies and feeding the crocs at the Malcolm Douglas Croc Park. We look forward to hearing about their adventures upon their return on Friday.

Thank you to those families who have paid their school fees. If you are yet to do so, please contact the office to make payment. If you are experiencing financial hardship please make a time to meet with me to discuss this. A reminder that if you hold a concession card you are eligible for a discount.

We have our first P&F Meeting of this term on Wednesday after school and we look forward to planning our Busy Bee and fundraising events for the term.

The Child Safe Framework sets out best practice to develop the knowledge, mindsets, practice and behaviours that enable and sustain a child safe culture and wellbeing for all St Joseph's students. Catholic Schools are Christ-centred, child-focused places of learning and faith formation. We believe children and young people reach their God-given potential through developing and flourishing in a safe environment. Therefore, no child or young person can learn and flourish if he or she feels unsafe. Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) is committed to creating child safe and child friendly schools. St Joseph's School uses the child safe framework to support a child safe culture founded on healthy and respectful relationships.

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is a child safety program for children from Kindy to year 12. It teaches children to:

  • Recognise abuse and tell a trusted adult about it.
  • Understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching.
  • Understand ways of keeping themselves safe.

Students at St Joseph's participate in KS:CPC lessons throughout the year. These lessons are broken up into a number of different units with the following themes and focus areas:

Theme One : We all have the right to be safe.

Theme Two : We can help ourselves be safe by talking to people we trust.

Focus Area 1 : The right to be safe.

Focus Area 2 : Relationships.

Focus Area 3 : Recognising and reporting abuse.

Focus Area 4 : Protective Strategies.

On Tuesday the 10th of August we will celebrate the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint. Our school was started in 1967 by the Josephite Sisters whose patron saint is Mary MacKillop, so we have a special connection to her. Students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will travel to St Vincent Pallotti Church for Mass at 11:30am. All parents/carers are welcome to join us. After lunch we will be treated to a Mary MacKillop puppet show from Sr Julianne.

Have a great week.

Mary MacKillop Prayer

Ever generous God, You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy. With confidence in your generous providence and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop we ask that you grant our request {insert request}. We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness. Ever generous God hear our prayer.

We ask this through Jesus Christ.

Amen.

A Reflection for the Feast of Mary MacKillop

~ Sr Jane

As Josephites (all those living the Josephite charism) we have a special love for those who are marginalised, experiencing poverty or excluded. On this feast day I wonder if we might honour and remember our Saint Mary MacKillop’s kindness; especially remembering and honouring those that are excluded, marginalised and are known as refugees today.

In a letter Mary wrote to Sister Josephine McMullen in Rockhampton, Queensland (1875) she refers to the kindness, humility and love that was needed within the Josephite community at the time. Mary wanted to grow kindness - not a spirit of fear but of love for all, she writes: “Be then careful, my own darling, and get them all to love you, but not to fear.”

She goes on to later in the letter to also discuss clergy and those outside of the Josephite community at the time… “Be kind to the poor foreigners; remember that I was a foreigner once and as such was never laughed at, nor unkindly criticised.”

I hope this image connects us to all excluded, and especially people travelling as refugees today. May we remember Saint Mary MacKillop's example, "be kind" and trust in our unconditionally loving God. See:

The Spirit of the Arts Festival, a communal celebration of The Arts across Catholics schools in WA, is happening in September. We have the opportunity to participate through recording a video clip, of our unique location and our students singing the song Faith in the Future, to be shown at the festival in Perth. This video acts as inspiration for the concept:

https://vimeo.com/554647912. With the lyrics (see right), please encourage students to enjoy practising the song at home. It will be a great achievement for the students to feel good about!

Thank you for your support in this project.

Social Justice Sunday

We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on the 29th of August. The Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, invites us to join in responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to take a seven-year journey towards total ecological sustainability guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals. The Statement provides theological foundations to ground and inspire our efforts to care for creation while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded.
