Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

Thank you to all students, staff and families for your efforts in making our first week of Term 3 a successful one. We look forward to a busy second week of term with music performances, 3-way conferences, the return of Language Nest lessons, Auskick, football with East Kimberley College and the Year 3 Assembly.

Staff News
Congratulations to Mr David Ballingall who has accepted a short-term Principalship at Kurrungku Catholic Education Centre (Billiluna). David's final day at St Joseph's for this year will be Friday 7th August. Thank you and congratulations to Ms Tanya Lockwood who will be teaching Year 3 in David's absence and also to Sr Julianne who will be taking on the role as our Religious Education Coordinator.

Major Swing Project
The children thoroughly enjoyed a visit from musical performers 'Major Swing Project' on Monday. A big thank you to Nikki and her team for providing great entertainment for one and all. Mrs Matilda Kehl will be offering students some additional opportunities to showcase their musical talents over the course of this semester.

Parent or Carer/Teacher/Student Conferences
It was great to see so many parents, carers and students at our conferences held after school on Tuesday and Wednesday. In relation to information provided in mid-year reports, academic and social goals have now been established. If parents and carers did not make a time to meet with their child's classroom teacher, we ask that you make alternate arrangements prior to the end of next week.

Year 5/6 Camp
Students are looking forward to their camp to Lake Argyle from Wednesday 12th August - Friday 14th August. Please see your child's teacher before the end of Week 3 if you have any questions.

School fees make an important contribution to providing your child with the best possible education.

Families who have a Health Care Card are asked to present it at the office for the appropriate discount on their tuition fees. If you are experiencing financial hardship, and are not eligible for the card, please make a time to see the Principal to discuss your individual circumstances.

ALL FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BY 25 SEPTEMBER UNLESS A PAYMENT PLAN HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE PRINCIPAL

We will continue to work on reducing our waste and recycling our rubbish this term.

We prefer card!

In these COVID times we prefer payment by card so that we don’t have to handle cash. There are EFTPOS machines in the office and Canteen. We accept most cards, including the Indue Card.

The Year 1 class has loved gardening at school. Recently we cooked a healthy lunch using a spaghetti squash and eggplant that we grew. We showed great teamwork while making the tomato and eggplant sauce on spaghetti and spaghetti squash. Some of us had never tried eggplant or squash but we all tasted it and many of us had seconds, third or fourth servings!

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about narratives while we read the story of The Gingerbread Man. As a class, we will create a Kununurra version, and hopefully share it with you at assembly in Week 4. We have created a travel agency in our classroom and are making passports and deciding where we would like to travel (if we were allowed!).

We are fortunate to have Miss Chantelle Stock completing her final teaching internship with us in Term 3. She has taught us many things, including some interesting Science lessons about light and sound.

It is a blessing to spend time with Sister Julianne each Friday. She always shares lovely stories of Jesus with us through some fun and engaging activities.

Sport
Sport at St Joseph's Kununurra is abuzz at the moment as we settle down after our exciting cross-country day in Week 8 of last term. Even though this event seems like it was only yesterday, the preparation for the 2020 Athletics Carnival is well underway. The Carnival is fast approaching and practise for each event is in full swing with the Year 3-6 students already fine tuning their shot put techniques. In the coming weeks students will practise hurdles, shot put, vortex throw, novelty games, 100m, 400m, relays and long jump. All students and staff are looking forward to what will be an amazing day. We are delighted to invite parents and carers along for a fun-filled day on Wednesday 19th September. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Mr Tom Zahra

School Bus

Pick-ups and Drop-offs

For the safety of our children, we would like to remind parents that children catching our white Coaster school bus will be dropped off in the afternoon ONLY at the address from which they are picked up in the morning.

Attempts to accommodate parents who ring during the school day asking that their children be dropped off elsewhere have resulted in a number of confusing situations, whereby children have ended up going home to an empty house or to a house where they are not expected.

Children who do not live in Ranch/Garden/Reserve/old town/Hidden Valley may not catch our bus home to a different address.

Your child cannot be dropped off at a different address unless it is an emergency situation (eg you have an emergency visit to the hospital and an arrangement has been made for your child to be cared by another family member or friend).

Many thanks for your cooperation.
