Message & Notifications From The Principal

Dear Families and Friends

We have come to the end of what has been an extremely busy term for our school. A reminder that Kindergarten will be leading our assembly this Friday at 1:20pm. Students will commence Term 4 on Monday 12th October. We wish our school community a happy and safe holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone again next term.

Athletics Carnival
A big thank you to Mr Zahra who organised our Athletics Carnival last week. The students were well prepared and competed with a sense of tremendous fairness and respect for each other. Thank you to the families and friends who came along to cheer on the students and well done to Ord Faction who were the overall winners.

Year 4 Camp
It was wonderful to hear the positive stories shared by Year 4 students following their camp last week. Along with Mr Absalom, Ms Deb and Mr Jamie, they enjoyed a boat cruise on Lake Argyle followed by a swim in the infinity pool. They then returned to school where they participated in more fun activities and enjoyed a delicious BBQ for tea. A movie was enjoyed before settling in for a good night's rest in the Library. A big thank you to Mr Absalom, Ms Deb, Mr Jamie and Ms Kris for organising this fantastic experience for the students.

Congratulations
I would like to congratulate Mrs Laura Christopher on her appointment as Assistant Principal at Mercy College Perth, commencing at the beginning of next year. We thank Laura for the valuable contribution she has made to our school over the past three years and we wish her all the best for the future. Interviews for a new Assistant Principal will be taking place this week.

We wish Bernice Dann all the best in her full-time role at the Kununurra hospital. Bernice will be finishing as an Aboriginal Liason Officer with our AFaFE program at the end of this week. We thank Bernice for the wonderful contribution she has made while working at St Joseph's over the past 5 years.

Announcements regarding our staffing structure for 2021 will be made early next term.

Student Achievement
Well done to Jonas Pufke who achieved some terrific results at the recent North West Championships. Jonas recorded times of 5 minutes 39 seconds for the 1500m running event and 2 minutes 53 seconds for the 800m.

East Kimberley College Work Placement Students
This week we welcomed Year 10 East Kimberley College students Lauren (Kindergarten and Pre-Primary), Amali (Year 4/5) and Nikita (Year 5/6). We thank each of the girls for working so well with all students and providing excellent assistance to the staff in these classes.

The Great Vegie Crunch
All students are encouraged to bring a crunchy vegetable to school this Friday as we participate in the Great Vegie Crunch. We will all gather in the undercover area at 9:00am and munch on our vegetables, seeing how loud of a crunch we can make!

Farewell
With sadness we farewell a number of students who will be leaving Kununurra at the end of this term. We wish the following students all the very best: Alannah and Iona MacTier, Jesse, Reuben and Queenie Day, Mackaia Wilson and Jono Dodds. We thank each of our departing students for the valuable contribution they have made to our school. We also acknowledge the contributions of Sally Dignam and Chris Day as active members of our Parents and Friends Committee and Ida MacTier who has worked tirelessly as our treasurer of the School Board. Ida will continue in this role via video link over the remainder of the year.
We also farewell Miss Chantelle Stock who completes her 4th Year teaching placement with our Year 1 class at the end of this week. We congratulate Chantelle on the success she has achieved over the course of the term and wish her well as she embarks on her teaching career in 2021.

Staff Changes
At the beginning of next term, Ms Judith Brennan will be joining the Pre-Primary class and Ms Sandra Kelly will be working in Year 1 (7:30am - 10:00am) and Year 2 (10:30am - 2:00pm). We thank Judith and Sandra for the contributions they have made in their respective classes and look forward to benefiting from their respective attributes with these new roles.

Book Week
Book Week will be taking place at St Joseph's School from Monday 19th October - Friday 23rd October. Plenty of fantastic bargains will be available in the library throughout the week and we will be holding our parade on Friday 23rd October beginning 8:30am. We look forward to seeing all of the wonderful costumes on display!

Reminders

Head lice and Ringworm

SCHOOL HEALTH ALERT

There are currently a number of children in the School Community who have

• Head lice

• Ringworm

Both of these can be easily spread from child to child

They are easily treated, and children should NOT attend school until treatment has begun

Head lice

Small wingless insects that attach themselves to the Scalp (skin on the head) and feed on blood.

They lay eggs called nits, which glue themselves to the hair shaft until hatched into head lice.

Treatment Shampoos and a fine tooth comb will treat both head lice and nits

Conditioner can be used –but only kills the head lice, so must be repeated every day for 10 days to kill the head lice as they hatch each day from the eggs

Exclude from school until after first treatment.

Treat everyone in the household

Ringworm (Tinea)

A common fungal infection, passed on by skin to skin contact.

Antifungal cream to be applied to the sores.

Bedlinen, clothes, towels etc to be washed in hot water.

Exclude from school until 24hours after treatment has begun

LETS ALL WORK TOGETHER TO STOP THE SPREAD OF

HEAD LICE AND RINGWORM

Sr Julianne is collecting used stamps for the Sisters of St Joseph Peruvian mission. These are put with collections from many other schools and parishes, and sold at auctions. Over $20,000 gets raised each year. Please leave in the box at the front office.
