Term 3, Week 6
Principal's Piece
Dear Parents and Carers
Our Book Week activities are under way, with the Hunt for Wally proving a little more challenging than expected.
Everyone is excited about our Stories under the Stars tonight. Our bus will do a trip from 5pm to pick-up those children who normally use our school bus (a parent or carer must accompany them). There will be a free sausage sizzle from approximately 5:10pm. Our guest readers will begin reading from 5:30pm. We look forward to seeing you for some stories tonight!
At 8.15am on Friday we will hold our Book Character Parade, an opportunity for our children to dress up as their favourite book characters. Remember, costumes don't need to be elaborate; sometimes the simplest of outfits are the best. You are most welcome to join us. We are wondering just which characters we might see...Thank you to our team here at school for coordinating these events, it is a terrific effort!
This week, we are also working with various visitors from the Broome Regional Office, Perth Office and visiting religious education coordinators from around the Kimberley. It is always a great opportunity to share with colleagues the fantastic activities that are happening here at St Joseph's. On Friday morning, we will host Fr Vinu and Bishop Michael during our Book Character Parade. Bishop Michael is visiting us as this weekend our Parish is celebrating confirmation at Mass on Sunday morning.
On Monday the Glitter Bug team from Community Health visited us at school. They spoke with the children about the importance of hand washing to stop bugs from making us unwell. It was both interesting and a great reminder about the simple things that we can do to keep ourselves healthy.
There are lots of bugs around at present, including a nasty stomach bug and cold/flu-like bugs causing headaches etc. Thank you to those families who are keeping us informed about the progress of their children's health. A number of children also have head lice. Hedrin is a good treatment (available from the pharmacy) or alternatively you can try using conditioner and thoroughly combing it through with a lice comb. As we know there are lots of bushfires around at present, so please also monitor your children for asthma, respiratory conditions and headaches.
Thank you to those families who are updating us when their children are away for reasons other than illness. This enables us to keep an accurate roll.
Thank you to those families who have made arrangements for payment of outstanding Canteen bills. Our Canteen provides a really important service for our children and regular/prompt payment of accounts helps us to maintain this service. Please check your account and follow up as needed.
Preparations are well underway for our dance performance set down for the end of term. The Concert will be held on Thursday of Week 9 (14th September), commencing at 5:30pm.
The weather has started to warm up and some students are beginning to tire by the end of the day and towards the end of the week. We ask that you:
- check in with your children about recess and lunch - do they have enough to get through the day without being distracted by hunger?
- ensure that your contact details are up to date - this is important in case we need to contact you in times of emergency.
- continue to monitor your children for illness and take steps as appropriate.
Thank you for the positive feedback about our school grounds, we are enjoying seeing the gradual changes that are coming about. We are also updating IT equipment in classrooms. This work is almost complete and both children and teachers are enjoying the benefits of the improved learning platforms.
Go well this week.
Miss Therese
Principal

Thank you - The Cambridge
Our new computer lab was made possible by the generous donation from The Cambridge hotel. At the conclusion of our St Patricks Quiz Night The Cambridge very generously donated the computers, which have now been set up for our students to create PowerPoint presentations, practice their typing, carry out word processing and much more.
~ Thank you to the Cambridge for their amazing contribution to our school ~

Canteen Volunteers
We are looking for parent helpers to assist Hellen in the Canteen. Even if you have just an hour to spare, it would be very welcome. Please drop by the office and we'll take you over to meet Hellen.

(You won't need a Working With Children Check if your child is enrolled at St Joseph's)

Send Your Kids to School
Send your kids to school - it is the best possible way they can get a good education.
If your child misses one 1 day per week of school,
by the time they are in Yr 4 they will have missed 1 whole year of school.
Already they will by 1 year behind expected learning!
It may take some tough love, but it is worth the effort to make your child go to school every day.
Set a good routine from Kindy, don't let them miss a day.
It will give them the best start in life.

Thank you to those generous families who have donated their recycling money to our school through Containers for Change!

School Bus Pick-ups and Drop-offs
For the safety of our children, we would like to remind parents that children catching our white Coaster school bus will be dropped off in the afternoon ONLY at the address from which they are picked up in the morning.
Attempts to accommodate parents who ring during the day asking that their children be dropped off elsewhere have resulted in an number of confusing situations, whereby children have ended up going home to an empty house or to a house where they are not expected.
Children who live in Lakeside or out of town may not catch our bus home to a different address.
Your child can only be dropped off at a different address if it is an emergency situation (eg you have an emergency visit to the hospital and an arrangement has been made for your child to be cared for by another family member or friend).
Many thanks for your cooperation.
