Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to Week 7 of the term. I hope you enjoyed the extended long weekend and that this break has allowed you and yours to recharge and be ready for the last few weeks of Term 2.
Staff enjoyed the opportunity to meet with colleagues to work on different aspects of Literacy and Numeracy last Thursday and Friday. Over the coming term, we will begin to implement this new learning in our regular routines.
At present we have a group of children preparing for First Communion. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. The celebration is set down for Sunday, June 11. We welcome your presence to support these young people on the next stage of their Catholic journey.
There are a number of different illnesses circulating in our community at present. There are 'flu viruses, covid and stomach bugs around. We ask that you continue to monitor your children and if they are unwell, please keep them home until they recover and are well enough to return to their classes.
This week we will be participating in tennis sessions as part of our sports program. We are also preparing for our athletics carnival in Week 10.
Teachers have been busy preparing reports about the children's learning during the first half of this year. Everyone learns at different rates and remember "C is for celebrate". If your child is at level C then she or he is on track with their learning and progressing well.
It is important to also think about the approach that your child is taking to their learning - are they always giving learning their best shot, or do they have a closed mindset of "I can't do this it is too hard?". As we know, learning new things is tricky and takes lots of energy and concentration. It is excellent to see that many of our children are inquisitive and wanting to learn new skills and build their knowledge.
Please be aware that in recent weeks the afternoon pick up time on Ironwood Drive has been difficult, with children running out of the gate closest to the Kindy room. This has caused some near misses in the parking spaces. To ensure that everyone is safe, we will close the gate closest to the Kindy room and ask that all pick-ups happen through the main pedestrian gate. Thank you for your support to keep all of our children safe during this busy time.
Thank you to those families who have already returned photo envelopes in preparation for school photos on Friday June 16 (Friday of next week).

Canteen Volunteers
We are looking for parent helpers to assist Hellen in the Canteen. Even if you have just an hour to spare, it would be very welcome. Please drop by the office and we'll take you over to meet Hellen.

Send Your Kids to School
Send your kids to school - it is the best possible way they can get a good education.
If your child misses one 1 day per week of school,
by the time they are in Yr 4 they will have missed 1 whole year of school.
Already they will by 1 year behind expected learning!
It may take some tough love, but it is worth the effort to make your child go to school every day.
Set a good routine from Kindy, don't let them miss a day.
It will give them the best start in life.
SACRAMENTS and other matters
As in previous years, all classes will learn about Sacraments and rites of initiation in their Religious Education programs. For students of the Catholic faith, there will also be an opportunity to receive these Sacraments at St Vincent Palloti Catholic Church. In this case, please contact the school office to place your child’s name on the Sacrament list for 2023. The schedule for Sacraments is below:
Baptism

Eucharist
The Sacrament of First Eucharist being celebrated on Sunday June 11th for Catholic children in years 5 or 6. If you have not already done so, please let Sr Julianne know if you wish for your child to be included.
This term, all classes will be doing a Unit of work on the Eucharist as part of their Religious Education Program.
Confirmation
Year 6 children on 27th August, during the pastoral visit of Bishop Michael Morrissey.
Other Matters
Mass
Each weekend, at St Vincent Pallotti Church on Saturdays at 5.30pm and Sundays at 8.30am. On Sundays, we also have Children’s Liturgy during mass.
Church Visits
In the next few weeks, classes will visit the Catholic Church for a tour. Fr Vinu will assist the children to become more familiar with ‘church etiquette’, the mass ritual, the surroundings and the sacredness of the building. He will also any questions they may have. Classes will either walk, or be bused to the church, dependent on age and weather.
Juniper Visits
Visits to Juniper Aged Care will continue this term. Teachers will notify you via Seesaw about the date when your child’s class will visit the residents.

Families at St Joseph’s to receive more affordable quality Catholic education
Families at St Joseph’s School will continue to benefit from high quality, Christ-centred and child-focused education in 2023.
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has announced that the fees parents pay at St Joseph’s will be $739 for a single child in 2023 (see attached email for information about fees for additional children). This compares to current fees of $1,137 for a single child.
The changes to school fees have come about as a result of changes to the overall funding for Catholic schools in Western Australia. Our school and CEWA are able to utilise a greater level of data to inform how we determine fees in a way that better matches our school and community’s unique context.
I hope families will welcome this news as indicative of our school’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Kununurra community we serve. The reduction in fees has been impacted by changes to the Federal Government’s funding model, which is now based on the parent community’s Direct Measure of Income (DMI). We are strongly committed to delivering the highest quality education alongside all our other current programmes offered in 2023 and beyond.
The change in fees is a strong sign of Catholic education’s continued place as the best value for money education option for young people in Western Australia.

School Bus Pick-ups and Drop-offs
For the safety of our children, we would like to remind parents that children catching our white Coaster school bus will be dropped off in the afternoon ONLY at the address from which they are picked up in the morning.
Attempts to accommodate parents who ring during the day asking that their children be dropped off elsewhere have resulted in an number of confusing situations, whereby children have ended up going home to an empty house or to a house where they are not expected.
Children who live in Lakeside or out of town may not catch our bus home to a different address.
Your child can only be dropped off at a different address if it is an emergency situation (eg you have an emergency visit to the hospital and an arrangement has been made for your child to be cared for by another family member or friend).

St Joseph’s Student Code of Conduct
The St Joseph’s Student Code of Conduct was developed by the students of St Joseph’s. Students participated in Steps 1 to 4 during Term 1 2021. Step 5 was worked through during term 2 and Step 6 completed during Term 3. The Student Code of Conduct was reviewed by students in Year 3 to 6 on two separate occasions. The Student Code of Conduct was shared with the wider school community during Term 3.

Our Code of Conduct prohibits bullying, harassment and other forms of peer-to-peer abuse and we require respect for the privacy and human dignity of other students.
Containers for change can assist in raising money for school resources. You can either deposit your cans in the school bins near the fence or take your own bag to the depot and write our school code on your bag.

Description Title
We are ready to collect your recyclable containers. Our drop off point is located in the staff carpark, just inside the fence. Money earned goes towards Mini Vinnies.
If you change your phone number, please tell us. We many need to contact you if your child is sick or doesn’t get picked up after school.
Most school age children are eligible for free dental care in Kununurra School Dental Clinic.
Primary School children become eligible to attend the School Dental Service in the year they turn 5.
High School children are eligible to attend the School Dental Service until they complete Year 11 or the day they turn 17 (whichever occurs first).
If you changed your address or phone numbers, please advise dental clinic staff. Missed appointments may result in suspension from the School Dental Service.
We are located on the hospital grounds in the Dental Health Building, 69 Coolibah Drive and are open Monday to Friday 7:30 to 3:30.
